I see you Stephen Amell! When Arrow ended after eight seasons, fans had feelings. The show kicked off what is fondly known as the Arrowverse and brought together a whole host of characters and plotlines. The series finale of Arrow felt like the end of a legacy, which it ultimately was. However, Amell had talked about how he knew that the show needed to end after eight seasons. He had gone on Deadline’s podcast, Hero Nation, and talked about his decisions as he was coming up on the last seasons of Arrow, saying, “I think it’s time to wrap up.” He explained that he felt there was a lack of creativity and he was starting to feel pigeonholed in his role, which could explain why he has pursued a couple of new projects that seem to have allowed him more creative freedom: Code 8 with his cousin Robbie Amell and the pro wrestling drama series, Heels. About a month later though, he went on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Inside of You, and chatted with the Smallville alum (Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor to Tom Welling’s Clark Kent). His answer made me wonder: will Stephen Amell return to Arrowverse?

So…Will Stephen Amell Return To Arrowverse?

On Hero Nation, Amell had said that he was ready to move on and work on other things, but on Inside of You, Rosenbaum asked Amell point blank: do you have any plans to return back to the superhero genre and can you see yourself returning to a reunion of Arrow? This is what Amell said:

“I was thinking about this question as I drove here and if the opportunity ever came up to do six to eight episodes of Arrow as like a limited series on Netflix or HBO Max or on the CW…I think that’d be amazing. I think the idea of coming back and playing Oliver Queen at any point in my life is a really fun idea. You know Michael Keaton’s about to be f–king Batman again. It has been 29 years since he played Batman. It’s been like six and a half minutes since I played Arrow. I love playing Oliver Queen and just in general, the idea of going back to that character as I’m getting all these new reps as an actor and I feel like I’m getting better, it’s intoxicating. But I have not been approached at all.”

Amell did clarify to Rosenbaum that he would come back to play Oliver Queen even if it wasn’t a limited series. “No, actually I wouldn’t put a limit on it at all,” he said. So we could possibly be seeing Oliver Queen in the Arrowverse again! David Ramsey, who played John Diggle on Arrow, is coming back for another show called Justice U, and it’s looking like fans will be getting a ninth season of The Flash, so there will be plenty of opportunities for Green Arrow to make an appearance. I think the reps at CW just need to reach out!

Stephen Amell’s Answer Lines Up With A Lot Of What’s Happening In Superhero Movies Right Now

Amell returning back to the Arrowverse even after he’s departed makes a lot of sense, especially with everything that’s been happening in the genre of superhero movies. As he mentioned, Michael Keaton is coming back as Batman in both the new The Flash movie and HBO Max’s Batgirl starring Leslie Grace. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, everyone had to grab the tissues when they saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back as their versions of Spider-Man. Basically what I’m saying is that thanks to things like the existence of the multiverse and time traveling, there is always the possibility that characters can come back.

It’s interesting that Amell would want to come back since he had told Hero Nation the following:

“We had done everything. There was not a lot to be done with the character of Oliver Queen. I don’t hold it against anyone who worked on the show. I would see other peers of mine, who were not necessarily doing things as difficult, yet they were receiving accolades within the industry and I’d be lying straight to your face if I said that that wasn’t important to me.”

With that being said though, there are also many places Oliver Queen’s story could go, especially if there was a spinoff series on HBO Max or Netflix. Amell has already proven he has taken behind the camera thanks to Code 8 and with the sale of the CW currently in the works, the direction that the Arrowverse could go in is up in the air. In this moment, I’m thinking of another Arrowverse alum too: Brandon Routh. He was also on Rosenbaum’s Inside of You and he talked extensively about how his exit from the Arrowverse “wasn’t handled well.” He was essentially fired from the show and it sounded like he wished he could’ve done better for his character, Ray Palmer. I would personally love to have both Amell and Routh return as Green Arrow and The Atom in a new superhero series, and after hearing Amell’s response about returning, I feel hopeful. I’m not sure about some of the other Arrowverse alums and whether they’d want to return, but if there was a big reunion (similar to the Harry Potter one, Return to Hogwarts), I think it would provide a lot of opportunities or even much needed closure.

Watch a short clip of Stephen Amell on Inside of You, where he answers the question that a lot of people are thinking about: will Stephen Amell return to Arrowverse?

You can currently catch Stephen Amell in Heels on Starz starting and Code 8 on Netflix. If you’re feeling nostalgic, all eight seasons of Arrow are also on Netflix.

Will Stephen Amell return to Arrowverse? What do you think? We saw the return of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Michael Keaton so it doesn’t seem too farfetched. Let us know in the comments below!
