‘Re-Release Of ‘Spider-Man 2′ in Spider-Mondays Surpasses Original’s Box Office Earnings’

Sony’s Spider-Mondays festival is now in full swing, featuring a re-release of director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 on April 22. This follows a similar one-day-only re-launch of Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie held by the studio a week prior. The enduring appeal of Spider-Man 2 as a classic within the superhero genre accompanies the Spider-Mondays program. The film outperformed its predecessor at the box office the previous week. Sony plans to continue to re-release each of its eight live-action Spider-Man films every Monday for eight weeks. They will do so in celebration of Columbia Pictures’ centennial year.

‘Spider-Man 2’ Re-Release on Spider-Mondays Outperforms Original at the Box Office

Spider-Man 2 grossed $805,000 at 467 theaters nationwide. It also had a per-theater average of approximately $1,700. This is the highest figure of any film currently in release. Moreover, this figure is an improvement over the $681,000 that the first Spider-Man grossed in 466 theaters nationwide the previous Monday. That’s a per-theater average of nearly $1,500.

The $805,000 grossed by Spider-Man 2 brings its cumulative domestic earnings to $374 million. This comes exactly two decades after its initial 2004 release. Fans hailed it as an improvement on its already beloved predecessor, and we consider Spider-Man 2 to be one of the best superhero movies ever created. Also, with the return of Tobey Maguire in the role of the titular wall-crawler, the film introduced the iconic villain Doctor Octopus, played by Alfred Molina.

The film received praise for its emotional narrative and meticulously crafted action sequences. It also earned a 93% “fresh” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

The Academy honored Spider-Man 2 with the award for Best Visual Effects and received nominations in two other sound categories. Serving as the second installment in Raimi’s Spider-Man series, it paved the way for a third film in 2007. Sony originally wanted to reunite Raimi and Maguire for a fourth installment. However, the production company abandoned plans in favor of a reboot. Spider-Man 2 concluded its global theatrical run with $795 million in worldwide box office earnings, falling slightly short of the first Spider-Man’s lifetime gross of $822 million.

 The Sixth-biggest Live-Action Spider-Man Film

Spider-Man 2 remains the sixth highest-grossing live-action Spider-Man film. It thus surpasses the two films directed by Marc Webb with Andrew Garfield in the lead roles: The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Meanwhile, theaters will release Raimi and Maguire’s Spider-Man 3 next Monday, which concluded its worldwide box office run with $894 million. The franchise has now amassed nearly $9 billion at the worldwide box office.

Maguire and Molina reprised their iconic roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. This film achieved unprecedented success, grossing more than $1.9 billion worldwide in 2021 and claiming the title of the highest-grossing Spider-Man film to date.

No Way Home also marked the return of Garfield’s iteration of the character. These were joined by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who took over the lead role. For his part, Raimi made a triumphant return to the superhero genre with the blockbuster Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
