It’s all heating up in the Doctor Who world! Last month, we got the BBC’s centenary special, which featured many returning friends and foes from the show’s long history. At the end of the special, Jodie Whittaker‘s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated into a very familiar face – David Tennant! After the episode aired, showrunner Russell T. Davies confirmed that Tennant will play the Fourteenth incarnation of the Time Lord for a series of three specials. Following this, Ncuti Gatwa will step into the role of the Fifteenth Doctor and will be the first Black actor to do so in a full-time role. However, information regarding the Doctor Who companion has been pretty quiet – until now.

In a recent Instagram post, Russell T. Davies revealed that the BBC will announce the new Doctor Who companion as part of the Children In Need show. This will be on BBC One today, between 7 PM and 10 PM GMT. As part of the post, Davies shared a picture of two heart emojis with a plus symbol and a red diamond. Previously, the official Doctor Who announced the newest Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, in much the same way. They posted the two heart emojis, representing the Time Lord’s two hearts.

Similarly, with this emoji, they also revealed one of the Doctor Who companions for the three specials, Yasmin Finney. We know that Finney will play Donna Noble’s daughter, Rose. According to rumours, her name will be Rose Temple-Noble, while Catherine Tate is confirmed to return as Donna.

As part of the post, Davies wrote the following caption:

“Exciting! And hey, I know times are tough, but if you could donate, that would be amazing. It’s the best cause.”

Children in Need is a British charity focusing on helping the lives of children internationally. Previously, the show has appeared many times as part of the Children in Need programming. This first started back in 1983, with the broadcast of the anniversary special, The Five Doctors. The most recent appearance was in 2019 with Anna’s Doctor Who Surprise video. In addition, the series has filmed special segments for the program, such as Born Again from 2005. However, this is the first time that Children In Need will reveal major information, such as the latest Doctor Who companion. It’s exciting stuff!

Currently, we know that Ncuti Gatwa will star alongside the new Doctor Who companion. He’s best known for appearing in the hit Netflix series Sex Education, and he’ll also appear in the much-anticipated Barbie movie. However, before he stars, the show will celebrate its own history with a series of three 60th-anniversary specials in November 2023. Naturally, Davies, Gatwa, Tennant, and the other members of the Doctor Who team have kept relatively tight-lipped about this. We know that previous companion Donna Noble, who Catherine Tate plays, will return, along with her family. This includes Jacqueline King, who plays Donna’s mother, Sylvia, and Karl Collins as Donna’s husband, Shaun. The late Bernard Cribbins also appears in his final role as Wilfred Mott.

Sadly, information about the new Doctor Who companion is completely unknown – we don’t even know if they’ll be human! Either way, this companion will join the ranks of other famous Time Lord companions, such as Billie Piper’s Rose Tyle, Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond, Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones, and many others.

Doctor Who Disney Plus

Doctor Who will return in November 2023, airing exclusively on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ internationally. Naturally, this will greatly help improve the reach of the show and will further cement it into an internationally beloved program. Currently, the exact air dates of the special are unknown. However, since the show’s 60th anniversary is on 23rd November 2023, we can guess it’ll be around that date.
