The world of The Walking Dead keeps getting bigger and bigger! There are plenty of expansions to TWD Dead City universe coming. We’ve got a spinoff featuring fan favourite Daryl Dixon, and AMC is currently airing the anthology series Tales of the Walking DeadAdditionally, the limited series World Beyond recently finished with a shake-up to the franchise’s lore. We’ve also known about the spinoff featuring Maggie and Negan for a while, which was called Isle of the Dead. However, AMC decided to change the title for unknown reasons, calling it TWD Dead City instead. Had they gone with the original title, it would’ve been the first series not to include “The Walking Dead” in the title. So, it makes sense that they decided to change the title to TWD Dead City.
This makes it clear that the series is part of the wider Walking Dead universe and not just a completely new show. Additionally, AMC showed off the new logo for the series through Instagram. You can check it out below! It keeps the same font as the original Isle of the Dead logo and the same colour. Like the first logo, there also seems to be graffiti across the writing, and it has a withering look. Also, both logos have incorporated aspects of the setting, which is New York, although in slightly different ways. Ironically, that’s not even where they filmed the series, as production began in New Jersey last month.

TWD Dead City Plot

In TWD Dead City, fans will see Lauren Cohan‘s character Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan‘s character Negan battle the undead in Manhattan. The official synopsis for the series reads:

Isle of the Dead envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters travelling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.”

Although AMC has changed the series’ name, it’s unlikely they’ve made many other substantial changes. As such, we can expect that the showrunner and creator of the series, Eli Jorné, will stay the same. Previously, he worked as a co-executive producer and writer for the mainline show. Cohan and Morgan will join Jorné as producers and Scott M. Gimple. Gimple is the Chief Content Officer for the Walking Dead universe. Currently, we know that AMC plans to release the first episode sometime in 2023.

When speaking about their time in the mainline show, Gimple had this to say about Cohan and Morgan:

“They kill the last eight episodes of The Walking Dead. Maggie and Negan’s story in the last eight episodes of The Walking Dead is incredible. And it set the bar for us to try to top it with .”

He also described how, in TWD Dead City, New York has become a “crumbling and chaotic” city and the gang warfare that controls the living. Similar to the mainline show, the setting ofTWD Dead City is roughly ten years after the onset of the apocalypse. Additionally, Gimple mentioned that the citizens have a unique method of travel – ziplines!

Maggie and Negan Spin-off

Gimple also gave some more details about TWD Dead City. He said:

“It’s a madhouse, and enter it and get swept up into the madhouse. There’s a lot of conflict. There’s a lot of action. There are zip lines, the walkers are insane. The rats in that city are insane. Eli Jorné is the showrunner, and they’re doing incredible work over there right now.”

Additionally, the president of AMC Studios, Dan McDermott, said that TWD Dead City:

“not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love, hate or hate and then love in Maggie and Negan, brilliantly inhabited by Lauren and Jeffrey. It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”

Clearly, fans are in for a pretty crazy time with the show! Other actors appearing in the show are Gaius Charles, Željko Ivanek, and Mahina Napolean. It looks like the show will have quite a star-studded cast.

You can catch the first episode sometime in 2023, exclusively on AMC.
