As if our hearts haven’t been broken enough by television cancelations and movie delays over the past year, The CW is here to hurt us once more. It’s a sad day out there for fans of Black Lightning, as we just learned that the upcoming season four will be its final season.

Black Lightning Ending After Upcoming Final Season

Three years after joining with the Arrowverse, Black Lightning, one of The CW’s many superhero dramas, will be wrapping up. It tells the story of Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a high school principal who is in retirement from the superhero world after years of being known as Black Lightning. Though there is no rest for the powerful, and Black Lightning has to make his return when a notorious criminal gang takes over.

The fourth (and now final) season of Black Lightning is set to premiere on February 8th, 2021. In a recent statement, showrunner Salim Akil reminded fans of how important this hero has been for the superhero genre. Not only did it give us the genre that we all know and love, but it was able to focus on a “family of powerful Black Women” and proved that “Black people want to see themselves” properly and truthfully represented on screens. The series also garnered recognition for portraying the first Black lesbian superhero on television, which is a pretty big deal for the representation of LGBTQ+ POC everywhere!

It’s Not The End For Everybody

Fortunately, this won’t be the last we see of the Black Lightning universe. Painkiller, a.k.a. Khalil Payne (Jordan Calloway) is a character with cybernetic enhancements and powers of his own. The CW has already ordered a backdoor pilot, which could easily lead to a spinoff for Painkiller.

Our wait for the final season of Black Lightning will now be bittersweet. While we can’t wait to find out what happens, we also aren’t ready for it to end!

How do you feel about the news of the upcoming season of Black Lightning being its last? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
