Expectations for the 2023 Golden Globes nominations and winners were high, considering the event’s prestige. Most times, the list of nominees is used as a reference for the Oscars. Last Tuesday, the Beverly Hilton hosted the 80th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, and we are here to give you the list of winners.

This edition saw many high-profile productions nominated. Wednesday stood out in the series category, which went viral thanks to the dancing scene. Other nominees include The Fabelmans, Avatar 2, Top Gun: Maverick, and The Woman King.

2023 Golden Globe Movie Winners

As for the movie winners this year, several stand out. First is the Best Motion Picture – Drama award, with Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans as the winner. This one beat Avatar: The Way of the Water, Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis, and Tár. Steven Spielberg also won the award for Best Director — Motion Picture.

Another well-deserved award was Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. Austin Butler took the prize for his fantastic performance as the King of Rock in the biopic Elvis. As for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, the winner was Cate Blanchett for the movie Tár.

Also, in a historical event, Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She became the first actress to win this award for a Marvel movie.

The film The Banshees of Inisherin took home three awards. First for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It also won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy by Colin Farrell. Finally, it was the winner in the Best Screenplay – Motion Picture category.

As for Best Motion Picture – Animated, the winner was Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. The new stop-motion version of the Disney classic fairy tale.

Award Winners in Series

There were several surprises in the series category and some movies with excellent results. The biggest surprise was seeing Netflix’s Wednesday go home empty-handed after many predicted it would be a winner. The show and Jenna Ortega’s popularity had us thinking that the series would at least get an award, but that didn’t happen.

One series that won several awards was White Lotus. It won Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. It also got Jennifer Coolidge an award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

The Best Drama Television Series award went to HBO’s House of The Dragon, beating out Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and (my favorite) Severance.

Finally, the villains took over. Evan Peters took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television with his blood-chilling role as the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Likewise, Paul Walter Hauser won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his performance as Larry Hall in the suspense mini-series Black Bird.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards brought many surprises with more categories than usual since it divided movies and series according to the type of production. This was a wise move for many, considering that it gave actors, producers, and directors more opportunities to win.
