The Christmas Special and the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 are approaching, and James Gunn continues to give statements about it. In this case, it was for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where the director provided some relevant information.

Gunn is currently in a conflict of interest since he holds relevant positions in rival companies. On the one hand, he has just been appointed by Warner as director of DC Films; on the other hand, he is the director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. The franchise led by Star-Lord has two upcoming releases, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians Vol. 3.

This situation means that the director will be promoting Marvel products while being the director of DC Films. This will be a headache for him, as he will talk about the competition instead of his current company in interviews. This situation is already happening. In an interview with THR, the director made fascinating statements about Marvel Studios.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was a revelation for superhero cinema. The filmmaker introduced unknown Marvel Comics characters and turned them into celebrities thanks to an adventure film that pleased most of the fandom.

Since then, this film has become a benchmark for launching unknown comic book characters to fame. The first installment was the second highest-rated film of phase two of the MCU, just behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This success has put a lot of weight on James Gunn’s next film for the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

There have been many comments about the film, both from the actors and the director. Actresses Pom Klementieff (Mantis) and Karen Gillian (Nebula) stated that the script for Vol. 3 left them “full of tears.” This statement hints that it will be a rather emotional film, with hard moments such as the origin and experimentation with the character of Rocket.

On behalf of director James Gunn he made some very impactful statements to Phase Zero podcast about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In a recent interview with THR, the director commented:

“…. I’ll be honest, I wrote the screenplay in a few hours, so it just kind of spilled out of me. It was very easy. Everything about shooting it was easy. Everything about getting the performances out of people was easy, whereas Vol. 3 was torture in every way. And so it was kinda like going back and forth between these two things. So it was really fun and really easy, and the score was instant.”.

The director carries the weight of two very successful films and has to manage a top-notch cast. This context may be one of the reasons James Gunn has struggled on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The director also made statements regarding the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in the MCU. This will be the next product released by Marvel Studios, at the height of James Gunn’s work for DC Films. Speaking to the Phase Zero podcast, the director stated that the Holiday Special is “very, very different,”, adding:

” is also very, very different than Vol. 3. Because Vol. 3 is a very, very emotional movie. And it tells this story about Rocket, and where he came from, and where he’s going, and how that ties into everybody else, and the end of this iteration of the Guardians. And so doing this goofy thing like once every four days and going, and shooting four days of Guardians Vol. 3, and then going back. It almost created a lot of whiplash. But it was also almost like the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special days were like snow days. That was recess. That was fun.

Everything points to this James Gunn movie being a fresh experience and a perfect preparation for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After the third installment of the saga, it will be Gunn’s end with Marvel Studios. However, it will be interesting to see how the director copes with the weight of directing the DCU at Warner Bros. alongside Peter Safran as he keeps answering questions about the MCU.
