The crisis just got bigger. Many familiar characters will appear in the annual CW crossover, but we now know of one more. Arrow co-creator and executive producer Marc Guggenheim has confirmed that Tom Welling is returning for Crisis On Infinite Earths. He will reprise his Smallville role as Clark Kent, who is definitely not anyone else.

Further Details on the Crisis on Infinite Earths

As we’ve previously told you, the crossover is a massive undertaking that will involve several of The CW’s superhero shows, including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. Beginning on December 8th on Supergirl, it will take place over 5 episodes. The Batwoman and The Flash episodes will follow Supergirl over consecutive nights. Then the crossover will conclude with Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on January 14, 2020.

While we obviously don’t know the exact storyline yet, we do have some hints. LaMonica Garrett, who first appeared as the Monitor in the Elseworlds crossover, told Den of Geek that the story would be similar to the comic story. Garrett is scheduled to play the Anti-Monitor as well, by the way. If you know your Crisis comic story, then you know that means he’s likely to start terminating the infinite earths.

Why is Tom Welling Returning Now?

As there are infinite earths, then it stands to reason that there are infinite character versions. (I say, unveiling my evidence wall.) As such, multiple versions of the characters will appear. We’ve already seen John Wesley Shipp reprise his role as the Flash, for example. More germane to Welling, though, was the announcement that Brandon Routh would appear as Superman in the crossover. Besides already being a part of the Arrowverse in various roles, Routh, of course, played Superman in 2006’s Superman Returns. As Tyler Hoechlin is the established Superman in the Arrowverse, that means we’ll have 3. Maybe.

That’s because, at this point, Welling is only tipped to play Clark Kent. Whether he’ll put on the suit like Routh and Hoechlin still remains to be seen. But at least we’ll find out what he’s been up to all this time. Smallville famously had a “no flights, no tights” rule where Clark was concerned. Whether Tom Welling will relax that rule for Crisis on Infinite Earths remains to be seen.
