LeVar Burton, Aviation Gin Align Just As Jeopardy! Post Announced

Ryan Reynolds has been the most prominent face of Aviation Gin, mainly because he has an ownership stake in the company. However, when you’re one of the owners, you can make big decisions. And so Reynolds did, tapping American treasure LeVar Burton for an Aviation Gin ad.

The LeVar Burton Aviation Gin Ad Is Part of a Larger “Campaign”

As Reynolds explained when he posted the ad to his social media, there is a method to the madness. The ad, he says, is just one part of his “LeVar Burton for literally everything” campaign.

And while this might be a bit, Reynolds’s support for Burton is not. To that end, Reynolds has been a vocal supporter of the effort to get Burton a gig as a guest host on Jeopardy!. Burton has been lobbying for a chance at guest-hosting, but ideally, he wants to be the permanent host. And finally, he’s getting the chance.

Jeopardy! Calls Burton to Guest Host

Picture it: You’re one of the 70,000 or so people each year who take the online Jeopardy! test. You do well enough that you’re one of the 2500-3000 folks that they invite for an in-person audition. Your name goes into the contestant pool after that. Before the 18 months are up, though, they call you. You’re it. You’re one of the ’round about 400 people each year who make it onto Jeopardy!.

(Dang, that gal knows a lot about comic books.)

Anyway, you wake up bright-eyed in Culver City, and take the shuttle to the Sony studios with your fellow contestants. You’re excited to be in the actual Jeopardy! studio, even if it’s bittersweet remembering Alex Trebek won’t be there. But who will be your host?

Since the show announced guest hosts, they’ve cycled through a list of choices, including Ken Jennings and Aaron Rodgers, that are mostly fine. Mostly. But still, there’s been an ongoing movement to get LeVar Burton onto the show. And as someone who’s loved Reading Rainbow, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and hosts that are reassuring, I am very here for it. As Claire McNear, who wrote a book about Jeopardy!, told NPR, “You want somebody who projects that sort of gravitas, that academic air to them that Trebek, of course, had. And so I think that’s why a lot of people have been really clamoring for LeVar Burton.” Yes. YES.

And finally, he and we will get the chance to see it happen. Burton will be hosting a week of the show, episodes that will air July 26th through July 30th. Jeopardy! producers, by the way, have said that they’ll select a permanent host by the beginning of next season, which should start airing this September. Psst, I say through my teeth, like a bad ventriloquist, make it LeVar Burton.

And let us know what you think on our social media or by phrasing it in the form of a question in these comments.
