James Gunn Confirms There Will Be Standalone Movies Outside The DC World

James Gunn will continue making standalone movies outside the DC expanded universe.

Filmmakers James Gunn and Peter Safran were named as the heads of DC Studio as of November 1, 2022. Since then, they have been constructing a document showing the route of production this area of comics will have for the next few years.

This new roadmap there are few data about it. However, in an interview, Gunn answered several questions that gave some clues. For example, there will be productions inside and outside the DC universe. We will have movies like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, which are out of the context of the main plot.

Another fact that James Gunn commented on is that the productions will tell the stories in three ways: animated series, regular series, and movies. A similar way to Marvel, which shows the character’s stories in particular series, as in the case of Ms. Marvel. Then they will follow it up with movies that tie all the plots together.

As is known, James Gunn and Peter Safran are weaving the entire plot of the DC universe movies into the roadmap. In a Q&A session the Guardians of the Galaxy director had with fans of this comic book world, he cleared up several mysteries. The first was whether independent productions like Robert Pattinson’s The Batman would continue to exist.

Gunn commented that some independent productions will be on the air and others will be closed. He clarified that there will be animations, series, and movies, inside and outside the DC universe.

Gunn was asked the following question: “Will there still be some standalone animation or live-action shows that take place in separate worlds (like ‘Harley Quinn’)? The director responded to this question, “Yes, some”.

Another fan asked about what kind of productions we would see in the DC universe. James Gunn confirmed that there will be three types of elements within the DC universe. The movies that will be released theatrically, the animations, and the series that audiences will enjoy on TV.

Gunn commented on how DC Studios’ productions will relate to the company’s comics. He said, “As everyone knows, I’m a huge comic book fan and I hope everything we do will lead to more people reading DC Comics (and vice versa). But Peter and I are not in charge of the comics – just all filmed DC entertainment”.

James Gunn also confirmed that the video games will tie into the DC movie universe. At this time, he did not reveal which games they planned to create. However, the DC studio route considered all possibilities.

James Gunn Is Getting Criticism From Fans

It wasn’t all questions for Gunn. Many fans criticized the director for encouraging the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. He still needs to finish his duties with Marvel. In fact, he had that production and the last sequel of this franchise pending.

The director responded to the negative comments by saying everything was calm at DC. He emphasized that Warner president David Zaslav knew the situation when he hired him. For this reason, he is not doing anything wrong, as he was at the negotiating table discussing his new position.

Director James Gunn admitted that his contract was exclusive to DC movies. However, this one starts when the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is released. So while this one is not released, we can see Gunn in the promotional tours of this Marvel saga.

He also spoke days ago about his feelings about leaving Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn commented that he was satisfied with the results and clarified that it was the end for him. Also, making a special emphasis on Rocket because he is his favorite character of the franchise. He emphasized that many open plots must be closed in this third film.

Gunn also stated that if he wanted to make the fourth part, it would have to be made with other characters. If they reboot the saga to continue and annex it to the Marvel Universe, we will have new heroes or there would be a baton passing in this third part.

For now, Gunn is still at DC and Marvel simultaneously. He continues to inform DC fans about the planning he and Safran are developing.
