Of course, we all knew about the sequel to the beloved 90s witchgirl classic, The Craft. It did not come as a surprise at all to find out like, five minutes ago, that this movie had even been made. Anyway, The Craft: Legacy release date will be next month on video-on-demand and accordingly, is not a surprise to anyone, least of all me.
Who’s Responsible Here?

Zoe Lister-Jones, an actress you might recognize from shows like Life in Pieces and New Girl, directed the movie. She also wrote the screenplay. Most of the characters are unknown at this point–the film’s IMDB page is pretty light on details–but we do know the cast.
Among others, the film stars Michelle Monaghan (Messiah), DAVID DUCHOVNY (!!!), Cailee Spaeny (Devs), Gideon Adlon (The Society), Nicholas Galitzine (Chambers), and Lovie Simone (Greenleaf). Blumhouse Productions, along with Columbia Pictures, is producing the movie. Sony Pictures Releasing will distribute it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The story centers on Hannah, a high school outcast who falls into a friendship with three other young women and begins experimenting with witchcraft. They unleash a power that at first seems to solve problems in their lives but slowly consumes them with unforeseen costs.” So it sounds like the story is pretty similar to the original. I’m sure there will be surprises, though, in this modern update. And, by the way, as that THR link says, Cailee Spaeny will be starring as Hannah.
Watching the trailer, Monaghan and Duchovny appear to be playing Hannah’s mom and stepdad, respectively. And it looks like Adlon, Simone, and Zoey Luna (Pose) will comprise the rest of the coven.
The Craft: Legacy Release Date Accidentally Leaked?

IMDB also lists the film, which, again, I definitely knew before yesterday was coming–that’s why I’m so calm right now–as completed. I would have assumed, like most people, that it was going to be next year before we saw it. However, sharp-eyed folks noticed that on Amazon’s press release for their “New in October” releases, there was an interesting entry. According to the press release, they were expecting The Craft: Legacy on Amazon Prime Video on October 27, 2020. That’s right–just in time for the weird Halloween we’ll be having this year. So if you’re disappointed about not being able to do all the usual Halloween stuff, at least we’ve still got movies. (I say to myself every day.)
Well, Amazon has now confirmed the release date and Sony dropped the first trailer today. The film will be on Prime Video and other VOD services on October 28–not the 27th like the press release originally said. However, like Mulan, it’s part of the premium video-on-demand services, meaning you’ll have to pay for it. In the meantime, you can watch the OG Craft on Amazon Prime Video and other services with a Showtime subscription. You can also rent it on services like Vudu (the cheapest option) and YouTube.
