Meg 2: The Trench Reaches $112 Million Overseas
The movie Meg 2: The Trench opened last weekend and is off to a promising start. The Jason Statham-starring shark production is swimming along at a fast clip, topping $100 million. In fact, this production exceeded the planned development budget, promising interesting profits.
These profits are significant, although still far from the first version released in 2018. However, Warner favors these facts and gives it hope to recover its investment and profit from it. Also, it should be noted that this production was not the only one to have interesting gains, as Barbie and Oppenheimer also performed promisingly.

Meg 2: The Trench Had a Good Start at the Box Office
Meg 2‘s start at the box office was quite good, considering it had about $112 million overseas and $30 million in the United States. This brings it to $142 million in a busy weekend for this production and cinema.
Meg 2 is the second installment in the franchise and was directed by Ben Wheatley; being categorized as a shark thriller. The film was financed by both Warner and China Media Capital, just like the original production, released in 2018. The performance of both installments is similar, considering the strong dominance of the foreign market.

The original film made significant profits with a gross of approximately $530 million. Of this amount, 73% was from the foreign market, while 27% was from the North American market. That implies revenues of approximately $150 million in the U.S. and $380 million in the rest of the world.
The highest-grossing country in theaters for Meg 2: The Trench was China, with $53.3 million. Mexico followed this with $7.6 million and the United Kingdom with $5.1 million in revenues. In the U.S., the film grossed $30 million, below the original, which grossed $45 million.
However, despite being below in the U.S., the first weekend grosses are quite significant, considering that Meg 2 cost $130 million to develop.
Other Top Performing Films
Meg 2: The Trench was not the only one with great results. The Barbenheimer may also continue its course with good earnings for Barbie and Oppenheimer. In fact, both surpassed quite interesting barriers. For example, Barbie crossed the $1 billion mark, while Oppenheimer passed the $500 million mark respectively.
Barbie’s figures are surprising, with only 17 days of transmission in the different movie theaters. This surpasses the results of Harry Porter’s last production, Deathly Hallows Part 2, which achieved such results 19 days after its release. Another interesting detail of these results is that director Greta Gerwig is now the only filmmaker to surpass the amount above in a solo production.
For its part, the documentary of the creation of the atomic bomb by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer, has so far $552 million at the box office. It performs quite well in IMAX theaters, with a total gross of $114.2 million, representing 22% of the total.
Part of Oppenheimer‘s production team said that they would postpone the IMAX broadcast of this film due to its high demand. The Nolan-led film is performing well. In fact, it ranks as the highest-grossing film for the filmmaker surpassing Dunkirk, which grossed $530 million.
Is cinema taking flight?
Meg 2: The Trench’s Box Office results raise the question of whether the film industry is on the rise again or is just a coincidence. Likely, the momentum brought about by the joint marketing strategy that both productions had by the protagonists themselves drove that.

However, this rise in the box office will likely suffer a collapse due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes. Not only because there will be no more filming for quite some time but because the actors will not support the marketing area of these productions, which will cause disinterest among users.
