A new Expanded Universe is on the way for Star Wars fans as Lucasfilm announced The High Republic this week. Code-named Project Luminous, this new wave of Star Wars novels and comics will feature interconnected stories across different publishers. The first phase called “The Light of the Jedi,” will begin publishing later this year. It will focus on a core group of heroes during, along with an event known in canon as ‘The Great Disaster,’ and some villainous space pirates called the Nihil.
Star Wars: The High Republic will tell stories of the golden age of the Jedi, set 200 years before the Skywalker saga that has defined the franchise. “We are so excited to be opening up such a rich, fertile era for our authors to explore,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “We’ll get to see the Jedi in their prime.”
Star Wars: The High Republic Will Tell New Stories In Print Form
The High Republic will not overlap with any of the Star Wars films or television shows. However it is possible that building this new history for the Jedi could inform future Star Wars stories. The first wave of the project will bring novels and comic books exploring The High Republic. Veteran Star Wars authors like Charles Soule, Claudia Gray, and Justina Ireland will write the first three novels. The first phase will also feature a comic series from Daniel José Older published by IDW, and a Marvel comic series by Cavan Scott. The full list of titles in this first phase of Project Luminous are listed below.

This adult novel is the first release for The High Republic. This novel begins at a time of peace and prosperity across the galaxy, but when “The Great Disaster” occurs, the Jedi must unite to face the threat. The story also features a Wookie Jedi as a protagonist, and an unnamed female Jedi who has a unique musical way of utilizing the Force in a way that fans have never seen. Light of the Jedi will be out on August 20, 2020 – just in time for the next Star Wars Celebration.

This teen fiction novel follows a Jedi padawan named Reath Silas on the edge of space and civilization. An official synopsis tells us the following.
“Padawan Reath Silas is being sent from the cosmopolitan galactic capital of Coruscant to the undeveloped frontier—and he couldn’t be less happy about it. He’d rather stay at the Jedi Temple, studying the archives. But when the ship he’s traveling on is knocked out of hyperspace in a galactic-wide disaster, Reath finds himself at the center of the action. The Jedi and their traveling companions find refuge on what appears to be an abandoned space station. But then strange things start happening, leading the Jedi to investigate the truth behind the mysterious station, a truth that could end in tragedy….”
Into the Dark by Claudia Gray
This young adult fiction novel follows a 16 year old Jedi knight, and seems to take place during “The Great Disaster.”
“When a transport ship is abruptly kicked out of hyperspace as part of a galaxy-wide disaster, newly-minted teen Jedi Vernestra Rwoh, a young Padawan, an audacious tech-kid, and the son of an ambassador are stranded on a jungle moon where they must work together to survive both the dangerous terrain and a hidden danger lurking in the shadows….”
New Comic Book Stories Will Also Feature In The Star Wars Project

The High Republic Adventures by Daniel José Older will be a comic book series from IDW. It follows two Jedi padawans named Farzaza and Luca. The High Republic by Cavan Scott will be a comic book series from Marvel set on a space station known as Starlight Station where the Jedi are dealing with the fallout from The Great Disaster.
“Star Wars: The High Republic features the Jedi as we’ve always wanted to see them — as true guardians of peace and justice. This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi and the Galactic Republic are at their height. But of course, into this glorious new era something wicked this way comes,” says Lucasfilm publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This initiative will give readers young and old a new corner of the galaxy to explore through rich, meaningful stories. Plus, readers will learn what scares the Jedi.”
It will be interesting to see what stories The High Republic has in store. This period of Star Wars history is unexplored, as the era of the Old Republic seen in the popular Knights of the Old Republic video game is set thousands of years before A New Hope. The first phase of The High Republic will begin in August with the publication of Light of the Jedi. It will be followed by A Test of Courage, out on September 8. Into the Dark will be out on October 13, 2020.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
