Activision Blizzard Merger Extended to October 18th
Needless to say, the Activision Blizzard merger with Microsoft has been huge. I’ve been on top of every announcement. Yet, I’ve still missed a few headlines. That’s how tough it is to follow. Now, the Activision Blizzard merger was extended to October.
This is a huge development for several reasons. For instance, it shows the companies’ confidence. It’s akin to Overwatch 2 coming to Steam. But, it may give more time to the FTC’s appeal or CMA’s arguments.
So, what could this mean?
The Activision Blizzard merger extended until October 18th

As announced earlier today, the Activision purchase extended its deadline. Previously, the deadline was July 18th. In other words, it was supposed to close yesterday. Thus, the October 18th deadline adds three full months.
Lulu Cheng, Activision Blizzard CCO and EVP of Corporate Affairs, announced this today. The decision came from both companies’ boards of directors. Apparently, it’s due to global approval and companies’ confidence. After all, the Twitter post mentioned over 40 countries validating the deal.

According to Cheng, the decision was influenced by confidence. After major approval around the world, it’s understandable. Plus, the post mentions that the CMA should recognize remedies to their concerns.
Most replies to the post show optimism. Many people are 100% certain that the purchase is going to happen. Others claim that the extension gives them more time to address concerns. So, having the Activision Blizzard merger extended could help against the CMA.
The possible backfire with the Activision Blizzard merger extension
October is fast? I think you guys were fooled and only gave the CMA time to sink them, you received a lot of support but this time you lose,in the end they delayed it as they wanted,I hope you are not deceived and when that date approaches there will not be a worse obstacle.🤦♂️

Having said all that, not everyone is optimistic. Many people claim that the extension was too much. Others are frustrated that the merger isn’t occurring sooner. However, the main concern is giving an advantage to the CMA.
Therefore, the extension could worsen the obstacles down the road. Also, we have to remember the FTC’s appeal. Lacking time was a reason for my disbelief of it working out. With more time, there’s a higher likelihood of it affecting the deal.
