The Star Wars universe is growing, thanks to Disney+. Not only did the streaming service provide a great ending to the long-running Clone Wars series, but they also announced a new spinoff in The Bad Batch. Then there’s the brand-new original The Mandalorian series set in the Star Wars universe that blew minds and gave us Baby Yoda. Disney+ is also developing a few prequel series, and a new reports suggest that Hayden Christensen is in the Obi-Wan series.

Disney+’s Obi-Wan Series Is Something Fans Have Wanted For A Long Time

Since the reports of the Star Wars franchise returning with a new trilogy, the fandom have wanted more. Even more so after Solo became its own movie, fans badly wanted an Obi-Wan prequel. Ewan McGregor’s willingness over the years to reprise his role from the prequels only fueled the anticipation and desire. Finally, once Disney+ launched and The Mandalorian was a huge hit, the franchise made fans’ dreams come true. A six-episode Obi-Wan prequel series on Disney+ will chronicle the adventures of the wise Jedi between Episodes III and IV.

There are approximately 20-odd years between Obi-Wan bringing infant Luke Skywalker to the desolate Tatooine to his reappearance in A New Hope. During that time, Obi-Wan could have embarked on many adventures that the Disney+ series will presumably focus on. We do know that during that time Obi-Wan went through the trials to learn how to become a Force Ghost. Which, Yoda implies at the end of Episode III, that he learns from his old master, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). So why isn’t Neeson returning in the new Disney+ series? I’m getting ahead of myself.

Anakin Skywalker May Appear In The Obi-Wan Series

A new report from LRMOnline says that Hayden Christensen has signed a deal to appear as Anakin Skywalker in the new Disney+ Obi-Wan series. The report cites an unnamed source, and confirms that “the deal is done”. However, it later contradicts itself, by saying that they “hope that this deal gets done”. No official sources at Disney+, Star Wars, or anyone involved with the Obi-Wan series have confirmed any such casting. Until then, we can only treat this as a rumor. But oh boy, what a rumor it is.

The report also claims that the role will be more than just a cameo, but rather a regular or recurring role. Given the six-episode run of the series, this doesn’t seem that far-fetched. Also given that Darth Vader himself has appeared outside of the cinematic franchise in the animated series many times, this is also not out of the realm of possibility. However, there’s a lot to unpack here.

How Would Hayden Christensen In The Obi-Wan Series Work?

Hayden Christen in the Obi-Wan series could definitely work out, depending on where the story goes. Since the series takes place after the prequel series, Anakin Skywalker is already Darth Vader. Post his transformation, Vader has mostly appeared in his full helmet and costume, making Christensen’s casting a little unnecessary. Especially, if he’s just the face inside the helmet. And it seems unlikely that a ‘regular’ would only appear every now and then without the helmet. And also unlikely that the series will have Vader without his mask often enough for Christensen to be a regular. So the leading theory might be that Anakin appears in the show through either flashback sequences or visions during Obi Wan’s Force Ghost trials.

If True, Hayden Christensen In The Obi-Wan Series Would Be Amazing!

Now that we’ve been practical and level-headed about this rumor, time for some excitement. The likelihood of Christensen returning to a franchise that he got a lot of crap for may seem unlikely. But over the years, Christensen has been a great sport when it comes to his involvement in the franchise, appearing at many cons and Star Wars events. His appearance at the 40th anniversary Celebration was a huge hit. Depending on the story and opportunity, I’m sure Christensen wouldn’t mind returning to the franchise, on-screen, to get the redemption that we would all love for him.

We live in a time of franchises continuing their stories decades later. A time when fandom favorites like Harrison Ford, the late Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill all returned to their iconic roles. So why not allow the man who brought to life the greatest villain of all time, and humanized him, a chance at the same?

Christensen And McGregor’s Dynamic Was The Best Part About The Prequel Trilogy

Say what you will about the Star Wars’ prequel trilogy, but Ewan McGregor as a younger Obi-Wan Kenobi was ingenious. And along with it, his dynamic with a young and reckless Anakin Skywalker was that much better to see on-screen. So much so that it was one of the building blocks of the animated Clone Wars series. So if Disney+ and showrunner Deborah Chow can bring that dynamic back, either in-story or through flashbacks or visions, it would be another great achievement of this new Star Wars franchise.
