Get your wands and robes ready to ring in the new year because a Harry Potter retrospective for HBO Max is coming January 1, 2022! In honor of the 20th anniversary of the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the streaming platform is bringing together filmmaker Chris Columbus (director of the first two movies and producer on the third) and several of the cast members, including Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), and Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). Someone who won’t be there? J.K. Rowling, who has disappointed fans everywhere and shown herself to be a truly terrible person for her unwavering stance on her anti-trans comments. Even though Rowling is the creator of the Harry Potter world, it’s fitting that she won’t be there, although she’s going to be seen in some archival footage. The messages of love and acceptance found in the books resonated with readers everywhere, and a creator who doesn’t embody those values should not be part of the world. With that being said though, there seems to be a lot of excitement about this upcoming feature.

What Can We Expect From The Harry Potter Retrospective?

According to HBO Max, the retrospective will “tell an enchanting making-of story through all-new, in-depth interviews and cast conversations.” Other Harry Potter alums expected to make appearances are Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch and Ian Hart. Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, said:

“It has been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it has evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical to say the least. This retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon — from the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later.”

HBO Max along with Warner Bros. have been slowly expanding the Harry Potter franchise. A Harry Potter quiz show is set to come to the streaming platform and there’s talk of a live action series based on Harry and his friends (although the details of how this would play out are still unclear). It’s clear the Wizarding World is alive and well though, and I’m looking forward to diving into the retrospective in the new year!
