James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is approaching, and the upcoming Superman: Legacy in 2025 is anticipated to revitalize the modern DC franchise. The recent casting announcement revealed that House of the Dragon’s Millie Alcock will portray Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. Alcock’s Supergirl is set to headline her live-action solo film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with filming reportedly commencing later this year. During a recent quarterly earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, David Zaslav, briefly mentioned the project, hinting at the ongoing casting process for additional characters.

“As I’ve said, we’ve really targeted DC,” Zaslav explained. “We have Superman Supergirl — great script has been written and that’s being cast.”

Who Is Kara Zor-El Character in DC Comics?

Otto Binder and Al Plastino first introduced her in Action Comics #252 (1959). Here the leaders sent Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, to Earth from the dying planet Krypton. After her debut, Supergirl featured in a backup Action comic strip and officially embraced her superhero role in 1962. She had various comic appearances, including a 23-issue solo series, until her demise in 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. The Supergirl’s legacy continued through different women, such as Linda Danvers and Cir-El, and finally, Kara returned to the role in 2004 after DC Comics resurrected her.

The big screen has embodied Supergirl in several films, television shows and animated projects. Helen Slater played the character in the 1984 film Supergirl, Laura Vandervoort took on the role in later seasons of Smallville, Melissa Benoist portrayed Supergirl in the Arrowverse’s television series, and Sasha Calle assumed the character in last year’s The Flash movie.

Who Is Charge of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Screenplay?

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has no release date or director. However, the studio has confirmed that Ana Nogueira is writing the script for the film. DC Comics initially involved Nogueira in writing an earlier version of a Supergirl movie. She is also attached to the role of Sasha Calle in The Flash movie. Although the earlier version was shelved, Gunn and Safran appreciated Nogueira’s work, which led to her landing a screenwriting contract for DC.

“A hearty public welcome to Ana Nogueira to the DC Studios family,” Gunn said last year through social media. “Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to move forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.”
