James Gunn Reveals DC Is Willing to Reboot Superman, He Just Didn’t Want To

Director James Gunn has a loyal fanbase, from those who enjoyed the Guardians of the Galaxy movies to those who followed his career when he still made small indie horror. One reason he’s so popular with his fans is that he frequently engages with them on social media. After getting fired from Disney and Marvel (before getting rehired) because of old Tweets, he mainly sticks to Instagram. Using a feature on the app, he took questions from his followers and answered them via Instagram Stories. Like Snapchat, these are photos and videos that self-delete after 24 hours. Yet, one fan took a screenshot of a very interesting question about the Man of Steel. It appears DC was willing to reboot Superman with James Gunn, but he wanted to do a Suicide Squad movie instead.

What James Gunn Said and Why It Reveals DC Might Reboot Superman

In the screenshot below, a fan asked if he’d be willing to do a sequel to Man of Steel if offered. The original film introduced Henry Cavill as Superman as well as Zach Snyder’s directorial vision for the D.C. Universe. Often considered the best of Snyder’s DCEU films, the Snyder Cut notwithstanding, This film offered up a controversial take on the character. With Snyder and Warner Bros. no longer on the best of terms, any sequel would need a new director. That’s why fans want to know if James Gunn would do that Superman movie, but in his answer, he reveals DC may want to reboot the character.

Gunn wrote:

“As has been many reported times, DC offered me whatever film I wanted to do, including some sort of Superman movie. (Not specifically Man of Steel 2, as I’ve seen reported.) I chose The Suicide Squad as it’s one of my favorite properties in the world. It’s the story I wanted to tell more than any other.”

Reading between the lines here, it seems the Warner Bros. and DC are not committed to continuing with the most recent version of the character. Henry Cavill still wants to play Superman, and even has an idea for the story. Yet, it seems that DC would have been willing to do a brand-new Superman reboot with James Gunn, if that’s what the director wanted.

With the second season of The Witcher coming and a full slate of releases for DC, it doesn’t appear that Cavill will get to suit up anytime soon. Still, if James Gunn hadn’t wanted to tackle Suicide Squad, it appears he could have written and directed a Superman reboot.

Would you want Henry Cavill to return as Superman, or do you feel cheated out of a reboot of the character with James Gunn at the helm? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
