When many people think of John Hamm in X-Men, they see it as a dream. For many years, it was speculated that the actor, best known for his time in Mad Men, would appear in the franchise. These were simply rumors, though. As the actor recently confirmed, however. John Hamm as villain Mister Sinister was a real possibility. The actor opened up about having negotiations to appear in the role. As fans of the franchise would know, that naturally didn’t happen. That’s despite many filmgoers calling for Hamm to turn up in the X-Men franchise at various points. As the actor notes, however, the discussions about the character took place before Disney’s acquisition of Fox. As such, any plays that the latter had for the franchise could be up in limbo. If John Hamm as Mister Sinister was inked on paper, it could still be tossed out with Disney’s new plans.

The company intends to blend the franchise into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, after all. That could mean that Hamm is better able to speak about negotiations. The fact that he is, however, could mean that he’s no longer in contention for the role.

John Hamm In X-Men Could’ve Been a Thing

Quite a few people have wanted to see John Hamm in X-Men for quite some time. In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, the actor claims that his fans weren’t the only ones who wanted him in the franchise. As he states, The New Mutants director Josh Boone also wanted him in the film. The director intended for the actor to appear in a post-credits scene, which would then set up a sequel with John Hamm as Mister Sinister. The actor also claims that he was interested in the role, saying:

“I never shot anything. I remember having a conversation with people: I’m a huge comic book fan, especially of the X-Men and The New Mutants, so I was excited to be considered. But these conversations happen and then life intervenes.” It’s unclear what led to the discussions coming to a standstill and John Hamm in X-Men no longer being a consideration.

Mad Men Actor Considered For Mister Sinister

Mr. Sinister has been a favorite of X-Men comic readers for quite some time. The character first appeared in comics under the name Nathaniel Essex. Under the name, he was a Victorian-era scientist obsessed with creating a superhuman race. He subsequently learns of the mutant gene and mutants. Eventually, he runs into Apocalypse – the world’s first mutant – who then turns him into Mr. Sinister. During the subsequent centuries, the character experiments with mutant DNA to increase his powers and extend his life.

Many fans of the character claim that John Hamm as Mister Sinister would’ve been the perfect casting. The character has yet to appear in a full-blown feature, however. While he did get a cameo at the end of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse – played by a different actor – the franchise has since gone defunct. That being said, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to introduce mutants to the franchise; Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to include Professor X. That could mean that John Hamm in X-Men and the MCU could still be a distinct possibility.

Whether or not that actually happens is debatable.
