Jonathan Majors’ recasting in the role of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU is in the spotlight. Plus, there’s a new update revealing the progress of the recasting process.

Jonathan Majors played Kang the Conqueror and several variants of the character in multiple MCU projects. However, Disney officially fired him after he lost his assault lawsuit.

Since the rift between Majors and Disney, fans have been eagerly awaiting news. We all want to know if Disney and Marvel Studios will choose a new actor for the role and the timing of such an important announcement.

Has Marvel Discovered a Recasting Actor for Kang the Conqueror?

Deadline’s industry insider, Justin Kroll, recently used X (formerly Twitter) to reveal that Marvel Studios is actively in the process of recasting the role of Kang the Conqueror. This decision comes amidst discussions suggesting that the studio might opt to eliminate the character entirely following the controversy involving Jonathan Majors.

Notably, there has been a flurry of recent rumors about who will assume the role of Kang the Conqueror, with actor Colman Domingo prominently featured in these speculations.

Kroll acknowledged these “comments” but stated that fans shouldn’t get their hopes up yet. While teasing that there are “plenty of Marvel breaks” that the public could hear about soon, Majors’ replacement won’t be one of them:

“See a lot ‘who will play Kang next’ and ‘here is a top contender for Kang’ comments this week, and all I’ll say is this, don’t expect that news anytime soon. There will be plenty of Marvel breaks in coming weeks on various fronts but don’t hold your breath on that one.”

In a subsequent post within the thread, Kroll emphasized that he is not disregarding any of the rumors concerning the potential actor to portray Kang in the future. This suggests that Colman Domingo might still be considered for the role.

“This isn’t dismissing any rumor this week about potential contenders for the role, I don’t have any intel on those being true or not true it’s just letting you know, if I were betting what gets announced first, Kang or the field, I’d put money on the field.”

Why Isn’t Finding a Replacement for Kang a Top Priority?

Marvel studios hinted Kang the Conqueror to be the heir to Thanos in terms of villainy within the MCU.

Established as a significant threat in Loki Season 1 and with the revelation of numerous Variants uniting during the post-credit scene of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU unmistakably positioned Kang as a central figure not only in the Multiverse Saga but also in the upcoming two Avengers films.

Now, Avengers 5 (previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) no longer bears the character’s name in its title. This indicates a clear shift in Marvel Studios’ plans for Kang following Jonathan Majors’ replacement.

Although Kang still leaves his narrative imprint within the MCU, utilizing the Multiverse provides a convenient means to continue his story in a different, albeit reduced, capacity—an approach Marvel Studios will likely adopt.

If the reports of the character’s recasting are true, it increases the likelihood that Kang will not play such a major role in the MCU. However, he will still have a starring role in this universe. This could explain why Marvel Studios is taking its time and prioritizing other aspects before delving into Kang’s narrative.
