Nintendo At E3 2023 – Why They’re Not Attending (Rumor)

After numerous setbacks and virtual game showcases, 2023 marks the E3’s return to a gaming event. Originally, it was meant to help launch the gaming event back at the forefront of the industry. However, it turns out that several huge gaming studios won’t be attending. These are Sony, Xbox, and Nintendo, who are easily some of the biggest developers around. Their absence will surely be a big blow for E3 and its participants. Currently, there’s no confirmation why we won’t see Nintendo at E3 2023 or the other studios, but there are plenty of rumors about it.

Notable insider Andy Robinson broke the news about these absences. According to his rumor, Nintendo “feels it doesn’t have enough major releases ready to show that would justify significant event space.” Naturally, this news is pretty surprising. After all, we know that Nintendo will release the Breath of the Wild sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, very shortly. If that doesn’t justify an appearance, we don’t know what will!

However, we may also not see Nintendo at E3 2023 because they’re keeping their news for their own Nintendo Direct. Usually, they hold their conference around June, the same time as E3. So, it’s possible that Nintendo would rather keep anticipating its event.

Even so, the absence of other studios, like PlayStation, will significantly impact the E3 showcase. Unlike Nintendo, this cancellation news isn’t much of a surprise. After all, PlayStation didn’t attend the previous two E3s, so it would’ve been more of a surprise if they did come to this one! Additionally, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer was unsure last week if they would attend. However, they’ve decided neither to attend nor have a booth at the showcase.

Where is Nintendo at E3 2023?

Since we won’t see Nintendo at E3 2023, that means we shouldn’t expect any major news from them while the event is happening. Similarly, Xbox and PlayStation will likely keep pretty quiet simultaneously. Previously, Xbox showed their support for the company, with Phil Spencer saying:

“E3 is just, to me, one of the seminal moments of gaming. I love the history of going down to LA, thousands of people there, getting to see great new things…getting to see people in the industry, the fan events that we’ve had. I definitely want that to continue.

Xbox is on the board of the ESA, and I think a successful and healthy ESA is critical to what we’re trying to go do. So we place our showcase, like we always have done, at a time where hopefully it’s convenient for press and even consumers that are going to the E3 event, and that’s what we’re trying to do now. We will continue to work with ESA in terms of their plans. As I said, we’re on the board, and we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to help make the E3 successful.”

But, with the absence of Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo at E3 2023, these plans have changed. Earlier this year, Xbox laid off several staff members and cut spending, following a dry 2022 with relatively few releases.

Of course, Nintendo may hold its showcase simultaneously with E3, but it’s unlikely. E3 will run from Tuesday, June 13th to Friday, June 16th, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
