John Mulaney Variety Special Coming To Netflix

On Christmas Eve, while some are celebrating the holidays and sharing time with family, Netflix is dropping a huge new special. John Mulaney, who owes a lot of his national acclaim for Netflix specials and his work on Big Mouth, is getting a new special. Why not give it to him; he’s one of the biggest comics alive right now. A John Mulaney variety special is already a great idea, but John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Gang is going to partner the comedian with a group of children ages 8 to 13 and special celebrity guests in the format of a variety show. If that’s not a recipe for success, I don’t know what is.

What is the new John Mulaney Variety Special About?

John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Gang is the sort of content that makes things like the Disney+ first-week subscription numbers seem less scary. Obviously, more competition makes things trickier, but Netflix has big names like Mulaney under its wing. Not to mention, Disney+ has around 15% of the content Netflix has at this point. The real perk to Netflix’ position in the streaming wars is their star power, and Mulaney is certainly a star.

We won’t just see the former SNL writer in the new John Mulaney variety special. The star said in an interview that we’ll also be seeing a slew of guests, including David Byrne, Tony Award winner André De Shields, Natasha Lyonne, Annaleigh Ashford, Shereen Pimentel, Richard Kind, and Jake Gyllenhaal. How’s that for a lineup? The young children at Mulaney’s side are also a focus of the show, with Mulaney noting in an interview that they “are more talented than me.”

When Does John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Gang Debut?

John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Gang is set to release on Christmas Eve this holiday season. If that seems sudden, that’s sort of the point. Netflix can drop content like this from nowhere, and we’ll all watch it. Your move, HBO Max and Disney+.
