Previously, the Predator film series was in bad shape. 20th Century Fox released the most recent film, The Predator, in 2018. Although it managed to be a success, grossing $160.5 million against a budget of $88 million, reviews of the film were rather poor. Critics said the film had many “missed opportunities” and claimed the action was “hollow.” Since the sequel film in 1990, critics have given the series poor reviews. Now, the Prey Predator prequel film seems set to change that.Unlike many other films in the series, this prequel movie happens on Earth in the distant past.
To be specific, it happened in the 18th century and shows the life of Native Americans at that time. In the Prey Predator prequel film, we see the lives of the Comanche Nation as they were in 1717. Eventually, the predator from outer spaces transforms their lives forever. So far, critics have given the film rave reviews. However, even though this is a sci-film, the creators ensured that it stayed historically accurate. In fact, the star of the movie, Amber Midthunder, recently spoke in an interview about the film. She mentioned how committed the director was to ensure the film is historically accurate. She even described their toothbrushes!

As we already mentioned, critics love the Prey Predator prequel film. They praised the series’ return to form, with one reviewer that it is a “rare action thriller that spikes adrenaline without skimping on character development. Prey is a Predator sequel done right.” In fact, the film scored 91 on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning it has one of the highest ratings in the franchise.

Another critic said the following about the Prey Predator prequel film:

The action in Prey alone would make the film worth checking out, and there’s so much else to the film that elevates it. It’s easily the best-directed film in the Predator franchise, and the streamlined (but specific) storyline gives the cast plenty of room to flesh out their characters with only a relative handful of dialogue-heavy scenes… Even those who have never seen a Predator film before should make sure to check out Prey.

Clearly, the Prey Predator prequel film is a good one! The film details a young Comanche girl who’s hunting some prey. Unfortunately for her, she soon learns that this prey is far from an easy catch. The official synopsis for the movie reads:

Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, “Prey” is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks and ultimately confronts turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

Historical Accuracy in the Film

However, although it’s a sci-fi, director Dan Trachtenberg was apparently very committed to keeping things mostly accurate in the Prey Predator prequel film. He wanted to show the lives of the Comanche Nation in 1717 as they were really – predators aside, of course! In an interview, lead actor Amber Midthunder said: “Dan at one point said, ‘Did people brush their teeth ? Like how did that work?'”

Eventually, they worked out how to make a toothbrush that the Comanche used at the time. This information came from one of the producers, Jhane Myers, who is actually a member of the Comanche Nation. The team did plenty of research to find out about the lives of the Comanche Nation and the tools they would’ve likely used during this time. In fact, in the Prey Predator prequel film, you can even see Midthunder’s character, Naru, using the historically-accurate toothbrush.

It’s great to see that the crew are so committed to accuracy with this film, and it’s sure to make the film successful. You can watch the film streaming now on Hulu, Star, or Disney+ in other territories.
