There have been plenty of fantastic animated feature films over the past year, as proven by the 2021 Oscar nominations. Though, none hit the nail on the head in each category as well as Soul. Combining existential questioning with bright and exciting themes appealing to children, the film ultimately serves as a reminder about the beauty of life. Fortunately, the universe created in the film is not off of our screens for good. A short film entitled 22 vs Earth is coming to Disney+, and you can watch the teaser below!

22 vs Earth Teaser Brings Back Soul Fun to Disney+

Soul shows us a glimpse into the life of jazz pianist Joe (voiced by Jamie Foxx.) He wins a shot at his “big break” in the world of professional music. Before fulfilling it, Joe tragically finds himself in an accident that should have ended his life. Desperate to return to earth, he brings a sparkless soul,  22 (Tina Fey), out of the Great Before and onto Earth. Together they must find a way to get Joe back to his body for good and before being caught.

In addition to providing breathtaking animation and encouraging us to rethink our motivations, Soul opens up a fun world of thematic exploration. After winning two Oscars (for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Score, respectively), we aren’t surprised to see a short film existing within the same universe.

The short film that the Disney+ teaser gives us, 22 vs Earth, hints at 22 in her old shenanigans and recruiting some young souls to bring some fun down to Earth. It will serve as a prequel, which makes sense as 22 has been around for ages, and her nihilistic behavior had to come from somewhere!

Take a look at the teaser for 22 vs Earth before it drops on Disney+ on April 30th. And if you haven’t seen Soul, you may want to check out our review!
