Taika Waititi Makes Us Cry With Coca-Cola Christmas Commercial

I’m almost ashamed to admit how much power commercials can have over me, and I know that I’m not alone. While most of us will collectively admit that we hate advertisements (especially in front of our YouTube videos), the people who make them sometimes do a darn good job of packing a punch, whether they’re selling products or experiences. And almost nobody does it better than Coca-Cola. Their yearly Christmas commercial has helped form their iconic media presence, and this year is nothing new. Oh, and they got a director to do it justice. Take a look at this year’s Coca-Cola Christmas commercial, directed by Taika Waititi himself.

Taika Waititi Delivers A Beautiful Coca-Cola Christmas Commercial

What company is able to deliver such a beautiful commercial that we willingly spend two and a half minutes watching it on our own time? Coca-Cola, that’s who. In this Christmas commercial, we watch the adventure of a loving father who will do anything to ensure that Santa gets his daughter’s Christmas wish list. The ending is predictable (it is a holiday commercial, after all) but the journey is inspiring. This dedicated dad travels far and wide, traversing frozen land and icy waters just to reach Santa in time for the big day.

Taika Waititi has become known to us over the past few years thanks to his impressive filmography that includes Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit. After the latter won Waititi an Oscar for screenwriting, we figured that the film offers would keep on rolling in. While we’re sure that’s happening, we’re delighted to get such a small piece of directorial beauty from him.

Coca-Cola’s iconic commercials have been a staple of Christmastime since 1995. Their Christmas Caravans are used to remind viewers of the magical moments of the season. Oh, and to sell the message that Nothing lights up Christmas like Coca-Cola. Watch the 1995 Christmas advert below for some serious nostalgia!

I for one don’t associate Christmas with Coca-Cola. Though, the release of these commercials does signal that the time of year is coming. There’s no doubt that the holidays will look a little bit different this year, no matter what you’re celebrating. But, as is shown with the new Coca-Cola commercial directed by Taika Waititi, all we need is a little bit of love.
