As mentioned previously, Emily Hampshire’s graphic novel will be titled Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch. It is co-written with Eliot Rahal (Machine Gun Kelly’s Hotel Diablo, Cheech & Chong’s Chronicles) and will focus on Amelia, one of the daughters of a Kardashian-esque witch family. Other artist collaborations include Kristen Gudsnuk (Henchgirl, Making Friends) and Ames Liu (Adventures of Bee). The official synopsis is as follows:
“Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch follows the least-favorite daughter of L.A.’s most famous family of witches, the Aierwoods. Amelia’s sisters have all followed in the footsteps of their prominent parents but everything Amelia does is just a little… off-band. A late bloomer who has yet to find her calling, Amelia uses her powers for mostly mundane problems but even those lead to magical misfires. As her family’s fame continues to rise, they have no choice but to exclude their bumbling black-sheep daughter from the next great chapter of the Aierwoods – reality TV! With the help of her adopted brother Spaghetti – who she accidentally turned into a yeti… long story – Amelia must carve her own path outside of her family’s influence.”
Z2 Comics is currently selling a few versions of the graphic novel and there are several limited edition bundle option that also includes a graphic novel slipcase, five (5) limited edition art prints, a limited edition enamel pin set, a QR code with audio-version of the graphic novel read by Emily Hampshire herself, and an additional bonus limited edition collector’s lunchbox with art by Fred Stresing. While fellow Schitt’s Creek co-star Dan Levy has also worked on other projects (namely an animated satire series about guardian angels on Hulu and a Netflix rom-com), Hampshire’s new role as graphic novel author is a first among the cast. In a statement to Deadline, Hampshire said:
“Channeling my inner low-key witch into Amelia Aierwood has been a pure joy. Creating a book like this was a dream I didn’t know I had. The talent of the people I’m working with transcended my expectations.”
Co-author Rahal also had a lot to gush about in terms of working with Hampshire and bringing Amelia Aierwood to life:
Working with Emily has been a positive throughline, both personally and professionally. She wants to make something that’s both gentle and silly. It’s heartfelt but off-the-wall. Something for readers young and older working through those big emotions. It’s really been such a joy to be a part of.”
Hampshire has starred in the horror series Chapelwaite and is set to appear in the supernatural mini-series The Rig. She’s also co-writing, executive producing, and starring as the titular character in the upcoming remake of the 1970s satirical soap Mary Hartman.
Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch is currently available for pre-order on the Z2 Comics website. The page says that it will be released in July 2022.
