Fantasy author V.E. Schwab is on a hot streak right now. Earlier this month saw the release of her new novel The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, that was immediately optioned for a film adaptation. Schwab’s best-selling Shades of Magic series is also currently being adapted for television. The latest news indicates that a new V.E. Schwab vampire short story First Kill will be adapted by Netflix into a television series. Belletrist Productions has picked up the rights for the adaptation.

Belletrist is the production company run by actress Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew). We do not know yet if Roberts will take on one of the main female roles in First Kill, but it seems very likely. Let’s take a look at what we know about the new television adaptation from V.E. Schwab.

A Teen Lesbian Vampiric Romance In First Kill

First Kill just came out in September, another brand new story from V.E. Schwab that is already getting an adaptation. Schwab wrote the piece for a short story collection called Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite. The anthology came out September 22, from Imprint Books, edited by Natalie C. Parker and Zoraida Córdova. The story promises to be as a ‘teen lesbian vampire romance.’ It seems likely to attract fans of other teen supernatural dramas on Netflix like Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

The synopsis for the story tells us that First Kill is about a young vampire trying to claim her place in her powerful family. But things get tricky when she starts to develop feelings for her mark, and discovers that the other girl is also a vampire slayer.

“When it’s time for teenage vampire Juliette to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family, she sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope. But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for…”

V.E. Schwab will also write the hour long, 8-episode First Kill series for Netflix, and will also serve as an executive producer. Felicia D. Henderson (Fringe, The Punisher) will serve as showrunner. Belletrist Productions won the rights for the Netflix adaptation after a competitive bidding war. Actress Emma Roberts launched the production company in 2017 with her best friend to focus on book and fiction adaptations. Given Schwab’s status as a bestselling author who writes incredibly cinematic worlds, it is no surprise that so much of her work is getting the film and television treatment.

Casting is apparently underway for the First Kill series on Netflix and we look forward to seeing who will fill the roles of Juliette and Calliope. To stay up to date on genre news, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
