The Disney+ live-action Star Wars series are a runaway success. While still reeling from the second to last episode of The Book Of Boba Fett and its season now completed, there’s still more Star Wars TV coming. After Obi-Wan Kenobi reportedly debuting in May, Andor is also set to release sometime soon. And we now have an Andor season 2 confirmation from one of the actors in the show. The Rogue One prequel will follow the adventures of one of the breakouts from a spin off movie, Cassian Andor, during his rebellious heyday. Andor season 2 on Disney+ will apparently see more story in that universe with that character. Read on to find out exactly how Stellan Skarsgard confirms Andor season 2 during an interview with a Swedish news outlet.

What Is Andor on Disney Plus?

Rogue One was one of the first Star Wars live-action spin-off feature films not about the Skywalker Saga. The story told just how the plans for the first Death Star came into the hands of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in Star Wars: A New Hope. Following the troubled life of Jynn Erso (Felicity Jones), Rogue One detailed how a group of unlikely rebels gave their lives to take the first step towards the downfall of The Empire. While Jones gave an amazing performance, it was the character of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) who stood out a lot. And this is amongst an already great cast of charming and interesting characters.

Andor initially seems like a Han Solo archetype. Similar clothing, ruthless outlook on life and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. But unlike Han, Andor’s passion lay in the success of the rebellion. His grey morality and difficult choices were in the favour of a greater cause, and not for selfish reasons. This is probably what resonated with fans so much; the rogueish charm of Han Solo with the passion of a young Luke Skywalker, but the exterior gruff of an older Luke Skywalker. No wonder the character got his own series. And now with the Andor season 2 confirmation, fans can expect to see a lot more of the character in the Star Wars Universe.

How the Andor Season 2 Confirmation Will Affect Fan Reception of Season 1

While Andor on Disney+ is an interesting idea, it was thought to be a limited series. The character’s ultimate fate is shown at the end of Rogue One, so one can only assume that the Andor series just provides back story, fleshes out the characters and gives context to his dark past and his motivations for the cause. However, knowing there will be an Andor season 2 on Disney+ kind of changes things.

The Andor show already has to deal with the fact that it’s a prequel to a character who is dead. Similar to Black Widow, the stakes of this story are a little removed, knowing the character will survive for the next story we’ve already seen them in. At least, what was my biggest issue with Black Widow. Similarly, since Stellan Sarsgard confirms Andor season 2, I wonder how aware I’ll be of the character’s continuing journey, knowing there’s more to come in season 2.

When speaking to the Swedish news site Dagens Nyheter, Skarsgard let slip when he’ll be starting work on Andor season 2 on Disney+.

“We start with Dune 2 in July. And then in the autumn, it’s time for the second season of the Star Wars series, Andor.” —Stellan Skarsgard; Dagens Nyheter

While it’s not a gasp-worthy shock and reveal situation, the Andor season 2 confirmation does raise some questions. Firstly: how much can audiences invest in two seasons of story centering on a character who we know dies at the end of Rogue One? And second: how much depth can they provide to that character for two seasons, without it either becoming redundant (Skywalker Saga) or counterintuitive to the character fans originally loved (Solo: A Star Wars Story).

Unless the intention is something else entirely. On top of Diego Luna returning to reprise his role from the movie, Forrest Whittaker is also coming back as the extremist freedom fighter, Saw Gerrera. But on top of all that, Andor seasons 1 and presumably, now, 2 on Disney+ will also feature a cast of newcomers. It might be that many of these new characters from Andor, might make their way over to the extended Star Wars Disney+ universe. Similar to how everyone from Ahsoka, Luke and Grogu to Cabb Vanth and Cad Bane just casually appeared in The Book Of Boba Fett.

Despite Andor Season 2 Confirmation, No Word on Season 1 Release

While it’s exciting to get an Andor season 2 confirmation, we still don’t know when season 1 will release. We do know that The Book Of Boba Fett has ended, while the Obi-Wan Kenobi series should be out on May 2022. So it stands to reason that Andor will release on Disney+ sometime in the fall of 2022. Stay tuned to this space for more on Andor seasons 1 and 2 as we know more.

Andor season 1 is coming soon to Disney+.
