The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is one that was in development since its announcement for Disney Plus. Supposed to be one of the streaming service’s premiere shows, it’s taking some time to get off the ground. But the latest from the Disney Investors’ Day event confirms, not only that the series is set to begin production in 2021, but so much more. A few months ago, it was just a rumor that Hayden Christensen will return to the Star Wars universe. But now, there’s confirmation and news of Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Which is exciting to fans for many reasons.

Darth Vader In Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Has Limitless Possibilities

In 2008 when The Clone Wars animated series premiered, it was a way to bridge the gap between Episodes II and III. The descent of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader could happen more gradually than the limited scope of the live-action movies. For the most part, it worked out pretty well, albeit in animated, voice form. Now with Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, that characterization can be better explored.

Director Deborah Chow also confirmed that fans will “definitely see Obi-Wan and Darth Vader get into it again”. More from Chow about the decision to include Anakin / Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series below.

“We couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader.”

Hayden Christensen in Clone Wars Flashback?

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus will take place 10 years after the events of Episode III: Revenge Of the Sith. This means that Darth Vader is already active and terrorizing the galaxy. So what’s the point of casting Hayden Christensen, if the character is always behind a mask anyway? Christensen famously requested to be in the Darth Vader suit for that one scene in Episode III. But it does seem unlikely that he would reprise his role to be in a suit for an entire series. Unless of course, there’s more to it.

With Christensen back, The Obi-Wan series can go back and explore his relationship with Anakin even more through flashbacks. The creators can literally create more stories set in The Clone Wars animated show’s time-line, but this time, in live-action. And given how good both Ewan Mcgregor and Christensen still look, I’d totally believe them as being younger than they play. Plus there’s always the feathering of their features with that patented Marvel de-aging tech.

Ewan McGregor Is As Giddy As Us About Their Reunion

The pairing of Ewan McGregor as a young Obi-Wan and Christensen as Anakin Skywalker was one of the best things about the Star Wars prequel trilogies. The characters, meant to be surrogate brothers, and Obi-Wan meant to also be the strong male influence in Anakin’s life had great chemistry together. And in the official announcement of Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, McGregor shared his excitement about the reunion.

“The most beautiful thing of all is that it’s brought me back together with Hayden. It’ll be amazing to bring those characters back together again, very unexpectedly. “Having another swing at each other might be quite satisfying for everybody. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we’re going to enjoy making it.”

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will begin production in 2021. No word on a release date.
