Zack Snyder has finally found a home over at Netflix. The acclaimed filmmaker has had a tumultuous time completing his vision with Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Justice League. But with the Snyder Cut finally released, it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. Which he definitely has done with one of Netflix’s biggest hits last year in Army Of The Dead. Cementing his association with the streamer, Snyder is even building out his own shared universe with a prequel spin-off in The Army Of Thieves and the upcoming Lost Vegas anime. The next big thing releasing on Netflix is Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon; a sci-fi epic, inspired by Star Wars. With production underway soon, Snyder recently gave us the first-ever Rebel Moon concept art. While it’s a small image, it definitely looks like something we can get very invested in when Netflix’s Rebel Moon finally releases.

How Zack Snyder Landed At Netflix

Zack Snyder’s filmography has been a little unique. Beginning his career with 2004’s Dawn Of The Dead remake, he has dabbled in mostly adaptation, remakes or comic book-inspired films his entire career. The Army Of The Dead was the first-ever original movie that he directed and co-wrote, and that went on to great success at Netflix. Given that success, Snyder is now deciding to brush off even his older original idea and find a home for it at Netflix. Which is kind of awesome, actually.

While working with Warner Bros for most of his career, that relationship went sour during the making of Justice League. Creative differences plus a personal tragedy around the same time resulted in Snyder ending his association with the studio. The relationship did repair itself, at least with the new administration, as Snyder’s own Justice League ultimately did see release as the Snyder Cut on HBO Max. But despite that, Snyder seems to have decided not to continue with them at this point.

The upcoming Rebel Moon, concept art that he just shared with us recently, looks to be more of a brand that Netflix usually goes for. A science-fiction epic like that of Star Wars is totally Netflix’s bag, as they heavily invest in small and large fantasy or sci-fi properties like Altered Carbon or Lost In Space. After fleshing out the Dead zombie universe for the streamer, looks like Rebel Moon is the next big thing from Snyder coming to Netflix.

What Is Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon?

According to an interview with THR, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon was initially a Star Wars pitch. Pre-2012, Snyder pitched a version of Star Wars that was much darker and meant to take the franchise in a new direction. Those talks ultimately fizzled out, given that Disney was in the process of acquiring Lucasflims, and the entire Star Wars library at that time. Since then the idea for what would become Rebel Moon was in Snyder’s rear-view window. But during the making of Army Of The Dead, Snyder began reworking the pitch into its own original feature film.

While not a lot of known about Netflix’s Rebel Moon, the official synopsis sounds very familiar.

The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them make a stand.

The Plot Of Netflix’s Rebel Moon Sounds Familiar

The story of a colony terrorized, causing a young adventurer to go seek help from elite warriors basically sounds like the plot of The Seven Samurai. Which isn’t too far off the map, actually. George Lucas’s own inspiration came from Kurosawa movies, especially The Hidden Fortress. So it’s no surprise that Snyder’s own Star Wars-inspired film, reworked to be an original movie, shares some similarities to a Kurosawa movie. In the THR interview, Snyder even admitted to being a huge Kurosawa fan.

Rebel Moon Concept Art Reveal A Dark World

On his preferred social media platform Vero, Snyder recently released the first-ever Rebel Moon concept art. The singular image showcases a very grim look and vibe for this world. While it’s just one image, a lot is going on here. The setting looks to be a dark and cloudy or dusty world. We also see some stone markers protruding from the ground, with symbols etched into them. The markers also have something tied to the top, making it feel like they’re maybe grave markers or futuristic tombstones? Which means this would be a graveyard, maybe?

But I’m totally burying the lead here, as the most glaring thing about the Rebel Moon concept art are the characters that we see. The faceless soldiers look very menacing and intimidating. The soldiers also have red-lit armour, helmets and rifles making their way towards the camera. It’s scary and dark and a very exciting glimpse into Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. I’m almost getting Captain Phasma vibes from the design. But the framing of the shot is as brooding as that last shot of Vader at the end of Rogue One.

The Rebel Moon Concept Art Also Provides A Production Update

Along with posting his concept art for his Rebel Moon, Snyder also gave fans an update on the production of the movie. Apparently, the principal photography will start in a few months. This is interesting, given that we don’t really have any other details for the movie yet. The only confirmed report we have is Sophia Boutella’s casting. But we’re not even sure if she’s the ‘young woman’ from the synopsis, or another character altogether.

What’s exciting about this casting, however, is Boutella herself. Making a name for herself in movies like The Kingsman and The Mummy, Boutella also does many of her own stunts. Combined with the stylistically and action savvy director that Zack Snyder is, only good things can come from the duo. No release date on Rebel Moon so far, but more details should emerge as we near principal photography. Stay tuned to this space!

Rebel Moon will expectedly premiere on Netflix sometime in 2023.
