Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is an Oscar-winning animated movie that saw many versions of the character on the big screen. One of those characters was Spider-Ham, who now gets his own new prequel short.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse introduced Spider-Ham to the masses. One of the special features in the Blu-ray release was an animated short featuring none other than Spider-Ham himself. The short shows one of the many adventures had by Spider-Ham, minutes before he came into the events of Into The Spider-Verse.
The full short has now appeared on the Marvel HQ YouTube channel and is a hilarious look into one of the ancillary characters of an already great movie.
Who The Heck Is Spider-Ham?
Spider-Ham is a character that made its appearance in Marvel Comics in 1983. The character appeared almost like a Sunday newspaper comic strip iteration of Marvel Comics’ best character. Despite starting off as a silly animal version of Spider-Man, the character grew in popularity. He eventually got his own comic book series, (with a new one upcoming) and many random appearances in other works. His most notable appearance was in the feature film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which now sees him in his short film.
Spider-Ham is the alternate reality version of Spider-Man. He comes from a world occupied by anthropomorphized animal versions of Spider-Man characters. Introduced as a parody of Spider-Man, the Spider-Ham character become much more. He was officially brought into the Marvel Comics world as being part of Earth-8311.

Spider-Ham’s Origins And Importance
The origin of Spider-Ham is like the original but ridiculously flipped. A spider named Peter who ended up bitten by a disoriented talking Pig. Peter transformed into a talking Pig himself, with the powers of a spider. Like his namesake, Spider-Ham then decided to dedicate himself to a life of fighting crime.
The character is very much comic relief, with his adventures always being goofy in tone, very metafictional, and many times breaking the fourth wall. The original character of Spider-Man and Peter Parker is tragic at times, given everything that the character has gone through. So a light and breezy version of the character brings a welcome change, even more so when brought in as a character into one of the most successful Spider-Man movies of all time.
Spider-Ham Prequel Short
The Spider-Ham prequel appears in the special edition features for the Into The Spider-Verse Blu ray. The short sees Spider-Ham, voiced by the amazing John Mulaney, kidnapped by one of his arch-nemesis. What ensues is shenanigans like a hilarious back and forth during a super villain naming session.
The short is a great reflection of who the character is, with silly and off the wall comedy, which is incredibly self-referential at times. It’s reminiscent of Bugs Bunny and Looney Tunes level of humor that brings a smile to your face. The short is pretty fun, making me wish there was a series of them. It also connects to exactly how Spider-Ham appeared in Into The Spider-Verse in the events of that film.
