Raya And The Last Dragon Official Trailer Surprises With Incredible Martial Arts Action
Raya And The Last Dragon is the latest Disney animated movie, finally releasing this year. It’s one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Not to mention, one of my personal anticipated movies, as discussed in our most anticipated movies of the 2021 Podcast episode. So it’s not surprising that the recently released Raya And The Last Dragon official trailer exceeds those expectations with some epic sequences.
Raya And The Last Dragon Official Trailer Kicks Butt (For A Disney Movie)

It’s surprising to see a trailer for a Disney movie be so action-packed and badass. I mean, it feels more like an awesome action movie, than a Disney branded film, to be completely honest. Not to say that Disney movies aren’t adventurous and exhilarating. But they rarely feature action sequences of this caliber. Ones that look gritty and very close quarters. Dare I say, even brutal. Not that there are not the usual Disney aspects front and center here as well. The trailers start with the introduction of cutesy, funny, and quirky characters that make up a dynamic team. But it’s more the second half of the trailer that gets the adrenaline pumping.
The first teaser did showcase a story of epic proportions. A nomadic journey, and a glorious quest, with a war weary lead character. The new Raya And The Last Dragon official trailer delivers on all that hype, with more details into the story and the reveal of one of the titular characters.
Bringing Together The Team

The new trailer begins with a montage of the usual ‘getting the team together’ type of sequences. Our very own Raya, in what feels like narration, talks directly to the audience. As the trailer goes, we realize she’s talking to her team. At first, Raya meets a con-baby, an adorable little trickster baby with her own team of monkeys. Others join up, as we get even more exposition into the world.
It’s a world at war. Various tribes and factions are warring with one another for a long time. But peace could come from the world’s own history. But it’s up to Raya and her team. For 6 years, Raya is searching for the Last Dragon. A mythical beast from this world whose appearance can unite the tribes and bring peace once for all. But finding the dragon, Raya realizes that there’s more to it than that.
The Action Looks Undeniably Stunning
Raya (Kelly Marie Tran) could easily become my most favorite Disney character. The trailer showcases her full-on martial arts skills. While the early part of the trailer is pretty funny and sweet, things turn by the end. Raya looks like the very first Disney action hero after Mulan. But where Mulan was a great product of its time, the action of Raya looks like something out of a John Wick movie. But with swords. And animated. Tran is incredibly personable, especially in the action scenes. I almost want to see this in live-action. Not that it really matters.
The quest for the Last Dragon seemingly ends with its appearance, voiced by Awkwafina. But it’s not what everyone expects. The seemingly comic relief character might not be the solution to everyone’s problem, but I’m sure there’ll be an inspiring message that leads to the resolution. How we get there looks insanely good. I’m super excited if you can’t tell.
Raya And The Last Dragon will premiere in theatres and Disney Plus Premiere Access on March 5.
