Last month, BioWare celebrated the third anniversary of Mass Effect: Andromeda, the latest game in their popular series. Of course, since it took players to an entirely new galaxy and it faced many problems, fans weren’t entirely pleased. With no new game and the Mass Effect movie seemingly stalled in development hell, fans are looking for anything to latch on to. So, that’s why a job posting last week for BioWare in Alberta has them thinking a new Mass Effect game is coming. However, are their hopes in vain or is a new adventure shaping up in the universe of turians, salarians, krogan, and asari?
BioWare is a storied video game developer with a number of beloved titles in their catalogue. Along with Mass Effect, they are known for the Dragon Age series of games and their Star Wars games, set in the “Old Republic.” (This is not the High Republic that Project Luminous is dealing with, but much further in the past.) Yet, their latest new franchise, Anthem, did not land with fans like they’d hoped. So, the new job posting for BioWare shows that the developer is hoping to return to franchises like Mass Effect.
Does the BioWare Job Posting Hint at a New Mass Effect Game?

So, with three years since the last Mass Effect game, will BioWare return to that well? The short answer is: possibly. The job posting from BioWare does not mention a new Mass Effect game specifically, but rather vaguely mentions that the new position will focus on one of their most popular game properties. Only, they never say which one., This means that while it could refer to Mass Effect, it might also refer to Dragon Age or Star Wars.
From EA’s careers website:
“What the Franchise Technical Director will do at BioWare:
“You will be the most senior engineering lead on the next major title in one of BioWare’s most prestigious franchises, and a contributing leader to BioWare studio strategy. You will partner with the other disciplines to build the technology and the programming team to deliver amazing player experiences.”
The least likely candidate for the prestigious franchise mentioned above is Star Wars. Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order was a certified hit, and BioWare’s own Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is still going strong and adding new content. So, that leaves Mass Effect or Dragon Age as the most likely contenders.
We know that Dragon Age 4 is coming at some point. In December of 2018, BioWare released a teaser trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel. Last September, BioWare head Casey Hudson confirmed work on the sequel is still underway. So, unless the Dragon Age team lost their Franchise Technical Director, it can only mean that Mass Effect will be making its return sometime in the future.
The rest of the BioWare job posting is mostly vague corporate speak and doesn’t mention Mass Effect at all. Still, after the drama with Andromeda and some fans dissatisfied with the ending of Commander Shepard’s story in Mass Effect 3, it seems the most likely candidate.
