One of the first anime of the new year comes in the form of the So I’m a Spider, So What anime. The brand new anime is from an isekai light novel series that was very popular. The novel seems to blend a lot of meta concepts of anime, its own genres, and video game elements into a pretty fun premise. The series looks to be pretty unique and kind of hilarious in its execution. Crunchyroll released the first few minutes of the new anime as a sneak Peek for fans ahead of its January 8 premiere date.

So Where Does The So I’m A Spider So What Anime From From?

Originally produced as a user-generated web novel, So I’m A Spider So What became a series of light novels in 2015 by Okina Baba. The series was so successful that it also became a manga, and now an anime. The ‘light novel’ genre is the Japanese equivalent of Young Adult books in North America, focusing on the demographic of high school to middle school-aged readers. The series is also of the ‘isekai’ genre, which refers to a story where the main character from modern era Earth finds themselves transported into a different time or place, or transformed into a different person or being entirely. Popular examples of isekai stories would be Inuyasha or Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away.

The Sneak Peek Of So I’m A Spider So What Anime Is Pretty Hilarious

The sneak peek begins with the main character waking up in a dungeon, transformed into a spider. The sequences that follow are her coming to terms with her current status as a spider, and how she’s going to deal with it. She explores her world, and how it works and tries to figure out how to live as a spider. It’s incredibly funny and very light-hearted, not to mention surprisingly meta, with some fourth wall breaks as well. The official synopsis for the new anime is below:

I, the protagonist, was just an ordinary high school girl, but suddenly I was reincarnated as a spider monster in a fantasy world. Not only that, but I awakened in a dungeon filled with vicious monsters. Armed with only my human knowledge and my overwhelming positivity, I’m forced to use spiderwebs and traps to defeat far stronger monsters just to stay alive… So begins the labyrinth survival story of a girl with incredible mental strength living as one of the lowest-ranked beasts!

How The Anime Combines Elements From Different Mediums For Maximum Comedic Effort!

The lead character’s reaction to finding herself in the body of a spider is pretty funny and definitely sets the tone for what to expect from the show. She tries to figure out how she got here; reincarnation or teleported into a different universe altogether. But before she can go any further, her hunger takes over and she’s unable to focus. The surprises keep coming as she realizes that her newfound Spider-family are the spider equivalent of cannibals, eating each other for sustenance. However, her hunger gets the better of her as she feasts, receiving the title of Kin Eater. Oh yes, there are titles.

Things get weirder as she discovers that despite being a spider in a dungeon, the world also works like a video game? A random voice advises her that she can use Skill Points to upgrade her skills. There are also stats for her as if she’s a player in a game where the main character can achieve skills, complete goals, receive points, and upgrade their skill set. It’s weird, and she also definitely thinks so as well, even referring to the text herself as it appears on the screen for us, the audience to see. It’s weird, amazing, and a refreshing surprise from an anime that definitely knows what it is. As does the main character, it seems? While this series was not anywhere close to my radar for new anime shows in 2021, now I’m definitely interested.

So I’m A Spider So What anime premieres on January 8.
