Beastars on Netflix was a unique anime that dealt with some complex topics. A world of anthropomorphic animals with their own society dealt with the predator and prey dynamics of it all. How despite their civilization, their inherently primal instincts was still something to face and deal with. Most of this was through the lead character of Legoshi, a wolf, who falls in love with a cute bunny named Haru. And then there was the metaphor of it all to their sexual identities as well. The anime series was sensual, mysterious, super suspenseful, and just worked on multiple levels of intrigue. So of course its next season would be one of those things that we’re just too excited to wait for. And now, we won’t have to wait that long. The Beastars anime season 2 trailer just dropped, and it’s just as interesting as we may have built up in our heads.

There are different ways to cut a trailer for the follow-up to a highly successful season of a series. You can re-acquaint audiences with everything they loved about the first season, then up the stakes. Or you can do something completely new that excites everyone for the new season. The Beastars anime season 2 trailer kind of does both. The trailer picks up by recapping the events of the season 1 finale and then going right into how that will affect the status quo of the new season.

Legoshi has successfully dealt with the primal nature within him, but it still looks like it’s a recurring theme in the new season. Rouis on the other hand, after fighting his own nature of being a timid herbivore, looks like he’s missing in the story of season 2 of Beastars. Replacing him in the school is a new Administrator, one who is a lion and possibly the Mayor from season 1? Along with all the fan-favorite characters returning, there seem to be new beasts added to the cast, along with new complications.

The New Characters Look Intriguing and Badass

One of the most obvious new additions to the Beastars anime season 2 trailer is this massive Python. In the trailer, he seems to be antagonizing Legoshi, and a short glimpse afterward even sees the snake constricting Legoshi. For all intents and purposes, the character seems to be the villain of the season. But I’m sure there is more to it than that. Especially considering that season 1 kind of ended in a cliffhanger, with the identity of the serial killer terrorizing the school still unknown. Hopefully season 2 ties in that story with everything else going on, in a way that makes sense.

Then there’s the sexy Ram. As strange as this may sound, but this looks more of a complication for Legoshi’s love story than anything else. Possibly even a love triangle? The Ram is all dapper and Fabio-like and one scene shows him getting kind of flirty with Legoshi. It’s an interesting idea. Season 1 dealt with the primal instincts of wild beasts as a metaphor for one’s own sexual identity and awakening. So to explore the concepts of sexuality even further by introducing ideas of either gender-fluid characters, or ones not bound by binary sexual ideologies would be an expansion of the themes already inherent to the show.

Beastars anime season 2 premieres on Netflix in 2021.
