Director James Gunn hinted that Volume 3 of MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy would be the last of the franchise.
During the San Diego Comic-Con, James Gunn revealed that Vol. 3 would be the end of the Guardian’s saga. Gunn said, “This is the end of that story. I’m sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn’t mean everybody dies.”
Volume 3 exclusive trailer and new characters revealed
Fans in Hall H were the first to have a sneak peek at what will happen in MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. In the trailer, we see Gamora lead the Ravagers in invading the ship of the Guardians. Star-Lord tries to reason with her but eventually realizes that Gamora has no memory of their past relationship or adventures. Gamora bluntly tells him that the Gamora he loved is long gone, crushing Quill’s heart once again.
Aside from the encounter between Star-Lord and Gamora, the trailer also revealed new characters to MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock finally makes his debut appearance. Will Poulter plays the role of Adam Warlock, a genetically engineered human with incredible cosmic powers. The trailer ends with a glimpse of a scene of a terrified baby Rocket.
The movie will tackle Rocket’s dark past, which will naturally introduce High Evolutionary. Previously, James Gunn has teased us about who’ll play the villain, but things went official when Chukwudi Iwuji appeared at Hall H wearing the High Evolutionary costume. The actor walked through the crowds in Hall H and roared that he “can’t wait to dissect all of you and see what I learn!” In the comics, High Evolutionary is a mad scientist in the pursuit of creating the perfect evolved human being by combining human and animal DNA. Iwuji’s role will be pivotal in showing how Rocket became the Rocket we know now.

Aside from Poulter and Iwuji, Maria Bakalova joins the stellar cast. She’ll play the gender-bent version of Cosmo the Spacedog. In the comics, Cosmo was a former test animal and was launched by the Soviet Space Program into the Earth’s orbit as part of an experiment. However, the dog’s spacecraft drifted out of orbit, which led him to land in Knowhere. During the drift, he got exposed to cosmic rays, mutating and giving him psionic powers.
MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy stars talk about Volume 3
MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy stars were present at the panel in SDCC and were visibly emotional upon seeing for the first time the trailer for the film. Talking about Rocket Raccoon, Gunn mentioned, “If there is a talking cartoon, what makes him real? And I realized he was the saddest creature in the universe.” Gunn’s words give us a heads up that the movie will revolve around Rocket’s origins.
When asked about his character’s role in MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord) mentions that Star-Lord will find himself in a difficult position in Volume 3, dealing with a version of Gamora who doesn’t remember a thing about him.
Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, says that the character will have a lighter personality. “She had a very cathartic experience with having Thanos eliminated from her life. So she’s finding her own personality,” the actress said about her character Nebula.
Meanwhile, Pom Klementiff, who plays the eccentric Mantis, said that the character is “still quirky and weird.” However, Klementiff hints that Mantis will show “a lot of confidence” and “some fighting skills” in Volume 3.

Recently, we saw the Guardians in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The surprising team-up between Thor and the Guardians started in Infinity War, and since then, they have traveled together, saving aliens throughout the galaxy.
MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit the cinemas on May 5, 2023.
