Furiosa Features 15-Minute Action Sequence Filmed Over 78 Days

Furiosa prequel

Fans of the franchise hailed Mad Max: Fury Road for its continuation of the energetic desert action scenes, and it looks like the upcoming prequel, Furiosa, will maintain that legacy.

George Miller’s longtime producing collaborator, Doug Mitchell, teased an extensive action sequence in a recent interview with Total Film, revealing that the film includes a 15-minute scene that took an astonishing 78 days to film. Mitchell further disclosed that this sequence necessitated the presence of nearly 200 stunt performers on set every day.

Regrettably, Mitchell didn’t provide further specifics regarding the content of that sequence in Furiosa prequel movie.

Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays a younger version of the titular character originated by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Fury Road. This was the character who offered a glimpse into the events leading up to it.

“You see an accumulation of skills over the course of a battle. That’s very important to understand how resourceful Furiosa is.”

“George and I had great conversations about why this particular set-piece was so long,” Taylor-Joy told Total Film. “It’s because you see an accumulation of skills over the course of a battle, and that’s very important to understand how resourceful Furiosa is, but also her bravery.”

Taylor-Joy also mentioned that it’s “the longest sequence any of us have ever shot.” She also commemorated its completion with a special “Stairway To Nowhere” wine for everyone involved.

The highly anticipated prequel takes place 15 to 20 years before the events depicted in Fury Road. It also serves as a retelling of the origins of the formidable warrior played by Theron. The prequel titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the story unfolds after her abduction from the Green Place of Many Mothers. They are pursued by a horde of bikers under the command of Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. The narrative follows their arduous journey home through the tumultuous Wasteland as they struggle to return.

Viewers have been treated to glimpses of Furiosa’s challenging journey through several sequel trailers released in recent months, and fortunate attendees at CinemaCon were treated to extended footage a couple of weeks ago.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is scheduled to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
