Deadpool 3 Is Coming To The MCU – And Don’t Worry, Of Course It’s Rated R

Initial thoughts surrounding the release of 2016’s Deadpool were filled with hesitation and uncertainty. Could a film “too violent” and “too raunchy” make big bucks at the box office? Ryan Reynolds seemed to think so. And when the film raked in more than $782 million at the global box office on top of it’s modest $58 million budget, a sequel was a sure thing. Deadpool 2 was released only two years later to near equal success. And while a third film was certain, its existence in the Marvel universe was a little less clear. Finally, after months of anticipation and predictions, we finally have confirmation: Deadpool 3 is happening, and it’ll be part of the MCU!

Deadpool 3 Is Coming to The MCU

Ryan Reynolds announced back in 2019 that a third Deadpool film was in the works. This was no surprise, as the first two films defied expectations and broke box office records. However, the future of the franchise was shaken during the Fox-Disney acquisition. This meant that Fox’s Marvel properties would be integrated into the preexisting MCU. But would there be space for Deadpool? Of course!

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, confirmed in a recent interview that Deadpool was still very much on the agenda for an upcoming phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The script is already a work in progress, with Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux (both are best known for their writing credits on Bob’s Burgers) writing the script.

Fans will also be eager to know that Deadpool 3 will certainly be rated R. While this may be a big jump from the usual somewhat family-friendly PG-13 films of MCU’s past, like Captain America or The Avengers,  it’s no longer a complete shock to comic adaptations. Deadpool 2 spent a short while holding the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. It was later surpassed by 2019’s Joker, another comic adaptation.

Deadpool 3 Will Join the MCU Soon – But Not Soon Enough

Deadpool has poked fun at fellow superheroes and villains since the character began. Though, the film portrayal has often felt secluded from the rest, tucked away in a corner where Wade Wilson could be as foul-mouthed and gruesome as he pleased. So, it’s exciting to imagine just how much funnier meta jokes, character crossovers, and surprise appearances will be now that Deadpool 3 will be in the MCU. I can already think of a few jokes to be made about Josh Brolin playing both Cable and Thanos!

The sad part of this exciting news is that we still need to wait a few more years. Apparently, the earliest Deadpool 3 can even begin filming is in 2022. This is thanks to the various other sequels and original films filling the next Marvel Phases, many of which have been pushed back due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
