Today, Sony held an event to launch the date and price of their next-gen consoles. It’s fun to see what each company is doing to approach the release of their new hardware. Xbox nailed their presentation of the S and X thanks to some creative pricing and All Access payment plans. We have the price of the PS5. It’s about what we expected but there are two price points for the different editions. Let’s talk about the Sony PS5 price reveal and also the release date.

The PS5 Digital Edition, which does not have a disc drive, will cost $399.99. The “regular” version of the console will cost $499.99. The price points are fairly competitive with the Xbox Series X and S price. The digital-only consoles are where there’s a big difference. If you just play AAA games, then the $299 Xbox Series S is better than the $399 PS5 without a disk drive. Overall, there’s a good chance that today’s presentation didn’t sway you away from what you wanted to buy. If you like Sony, then you’re going to buy these consoles. If you prefer Microsoft, then you’re likely still going with the Xbox Series X or S.

Today’s Sony PS5 price reveal could very well have blown up in their face. If the console cost more than $500, then gamers would have likely disliked the move. This was the safest way to play the reveal for Sony. They’re going to launch the console on November 12 and pre-orders go up at the end of September. We’ll have a full breakdown of the showcase soon, but for now, you can watch the presentation below.
