If you’re a Pokemon fan, then you’re probably excited about New Pokemon Snap. For the rest of the gaming world, the concept of this game probably sounds a bit boring. Why would anyone want to run around taking photographs of Pokemon? Well, in a New Pokemon Snap gameplay trailer, the goal of the game is laid out plainly. I think if anything, it does a great job introducing players to what makes this game special. In short, the world of Pokemon is immersive and imaginative. In New Pokemon Snap, you get to dive head-first into the world of the Lental Region. There’s plenty to do and see, so let’s talk about what to expect.
New Pokemon Snap Gameplay – What Do You Do In This Game?

In a fresh trailer from The Pokemon Company, we get a deeper look at the upcoming Pokemon Snap game heading to Nintendo Switch on April 30. There’s plenty to do in this game, even if you’re shrugging it off as a photography simulator. The joy of the game is finding Pokemon in the wild and watching them interact with the world. If you’re a diehard Pokemon fan, then I don’t have to explain why this is exciting. For others, however, the game might not seem like it’s worth trying out. Here’s why you might want to think twice before skipping this one.
In the latest trailer, we learn there are at least nine different environments you’ll get to explore. The game takes place in the Lental Region, rich with jungles, desserts, and other areas to navigate. Professor Mirror tasks you, a Pokemon photographer, with snapping photos of Pokemon in their natural habitat. The purpose of your sessions is to learn more about these Pokemon. We all know the basics about each Pokemon based on their type and attitude. What we don’t know, however, is what they do out in the wild. That’s where you come in. Kinda nice to have a Pokemon game not focused on beating the hell out of other Pokemon, in my opinion.
Searching, Scoring Points, and Developing Actual Photography Skills
Funnily enough, I dabble in photography. It’s kind of nice to see that real skills in the practice are going to impact your score. As you traverse each area, you’ll ride the NEO-ONE, a Jurrasic Park style orb that takes you around the region. You’ll essentially be on a rail of sorts, but you will have a say in taking different routes. As you scan your surroundings, you’ll be notified of different paths to take as well as which Pokemon might be acting in a rare or previously unseen way. Once you spot something worth snapping a photo of, you do just that. Your photograph and score will actually come from how well the photo is taken as well as what the Pokemon is doing.
Framing your Pokemon as well as capturing it in a unique manner is crucial to the game’s scoring system. We learn in the trailer that pose, size, direction, placement, and other Pokemon and things of note in the background impact your score. That’s a lot to consider, but hey, it’s sort of like real photography. After you save photos for scoring, you can also look back on what you took to make edits for yourself. You can add things to the photos to make your favorite Pokemon look silly, smart, or even scary. I feel like that’s going to be a fun way to interact with your photos, which you can then save and send to friends. You can upload the photo to the game’s online albums as well and rate others’ photos as “sweet.”
