We know you’re used to hearing disappointing movie news. With so many recent push backs on release dates, it’s hard to have faith in anything coming to the theaters in the near future! Fortunately, we have some good news. One upcoming movie has decided to ignore the theater-going chaos altogether and will instead head straight to streaming. Pixar’s Soul will be heading straight to Disney+, and we don’t have to wait much longer!
Soul Is Going To Disney+, Avoiding Theater Release
Soul, Pixar’s latest animated comedy, follows Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), a wannabee jazz performer. An unfortunate accident forces his soul to be ripped away from his body, and the soul winds up in The Great Before. This magical world is where souls spend time before going to a body on Earth. It’s where their personalities are developed and they figure out an outlook on life. Joe uses his experience on Earth to help other souls, like 22 (Tina Fey) whose outlook isn’t all that great. The Pixar film was initially slated for a June 2020 release date. However, as we all know, the coronavirus pandemic forced it back. After a few pushbacks, Disney has officially decided to send it straight to Disney+, avoiding a theater release in favor of the streaming service. It will land on the platform on December 25th, 2020, and will be included in the basic subscription plan.
This announcement comes after the release of Mulan, another streaming release that was originally meant for the theaters. The live-action adaptation of Mulan made Disney plenty of money, and that will hopefully make up for its hefty budget. Can Soul do the same? A Christmas release date could play in its favor, as it’s a day that many families visit the theater together. Plus, with less competition than most years, it’s bound to be on everyone’s radar!
