James Gunn expresses his desire for Margot Robbie to return to the DC Universe, either reprising her iconic role as Harley Quinn or taking on a new character within the franchise. Despite not currently being part of the DCU, the acclaimed actress has garnered attention for her portrayal of Harley Quinn in the past.

While speculation circulates, and there is even talk of Lady Gaga possibly playing Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux, Robbie has been openly willing to pass the baton of the endearing character to other actresses. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently affirmed his admiration for Robbie, expressing a keen interest in collaborating with her once again.

James Gunn and Margot Robbie have previously worked together on the rebooted Suicide Squad movie in 2021. Now, the director is contemplating Robbie’s return to the DC Universe under his creative direction. At the moment, no other actor is being considered for the role of Harley Quinn in Gunn’s next DC Universe project. Therefore, this underscores Robbie’s importance in the cinematic representation of this iconic character.

The director commented on Threads the following: “It’s been a long time since I’ve talked to Margot about Harley,” Gunn said. “But I would love to work with her again as Harley or as another character. There are no plans at this point for anyone else to play Harley. I mean, other than in [Joker: Folie à Deux] or in the animated series.”

Robbie did not rule out the idea of reprising her role as Harley Quinn, but expressed her desire for other actresses to take on the character as well. “I always wanted Harley to be a character that other actresses could play. Just like there are so many iconic male characters,” Robbie shared. “Harley is a lot of fun and can go in so many different directions. You give her to someone else and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her? The possibilities are endless’.”

Thanks to DC Studios fully embracing the multiversal aspect found in the comics. Here, various iterations of Batman and other heroes can co-exist across different mediums simultaneously. Robbie can certainly navigate the best of both worlds with her aspirations for the character.

James Gunn has yet to confirm Harley Quinn’s presence in the first chapter of the DCU titled Gods and Monsters. However, the DC cinematic universe has been characterized by including various characters in films where they are not necessarily the main protagonists. A notable example is Superman: Legacy, where Nathan Fillion plays Green Lantern. On the other hand, Edi Gathegi takes on the role of Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced plays Hawkgirl. Finally, Anthony Carrigan gives life to Metamorpho, among other prominent characters.

This diverse approach and the introduction of various heroes and villains in different roles enrich the DC cinematic universe. They also offer fans cinematic experiences that explore lesser-known but equally exciting facets of DC Comics’ vast repertoire of characters.
