Nicole Maines Just Teased A Dreamer Comic Book Spinoff

Supergirl may have ended, but that doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ll hear about some of the characters. In an Instagram post, Nicole Maines seems to have just announced a comic book based on her character Dreamer. Considering the still pretty sparse selection of queer comic book characters, a Dreamer comic book sounds amazing.

What Could a Dreamer Comic Book Be About?

The foundation for Dreamer’s character in Supergirl is fighting for justice for oppressed people, usually aliens. Her arc blends with the rest of the Superfriends, but at its core, that’s her whole deal. A comic book just following Dreamer could go back to that in a way that a few spinoffs have before.

As a show, Supergirl was a campy delight that followed a bunch of super-powered youths as they fought a new monster of the week, or in some cases, monster of the season. There’s the core group of youths, and around them are some recurring characters who pop in for a bit and pop out until they’re relevant again or until they need someone to be in danger. There are stakes, but they aren’t that high. And the visuals are… doing their best. All of this brings to mind another show that followed the same formula, but it was the early 2000s so instead of superheroes, it was vampires…

The Dreamer spinoff could be to Supergirl what Angel was to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The ingredients are all there. We have a powerful person with a past characterized by strife and injustice. Dreamer is compelling enough to be her own main character, and the story is already baked into her origin. She’s a transgender alien who has been spurred to action when she sees injustice against someone she empathize with. That’s like a big green arrow pointing to an episodic comic series of Dreamer fighting for alien and gay rights on behalf of DCs many different species.

Camrus Johnson did the same thing with his character from Batwoman, and that went pretty well. We’re hoping for the same success for a Dreamer comic spinoff after the Supergirl series finale
