The dry spell of film releases caused by the coronavirus pandemic was much shorter than we had anticipated. However, the early summer of 2020 still felt like a time where we would have watched anything just because it was new. When The Old Guard dropped on July 10th, 2020, we flocked to our laptops to watch a woman-led, woman-directed comic book adaptation and were more than pleased with the results. The Old Guard 2 is on its way, and Victoria Mahoney will be its director.

Victoria Mahoney Signs Up As Director Of The Old Guard 2

The Old Guard gave us an insightful story on the triumphs and terribleness of immortality. Based on Greg Rucka’s comic book, we follow Andy (Charlize Theron, who also produces the film), a warrior who has been dealing with the atrocities of humankind for centuries. She is joined by a team of fellow fighters that are fed up with the world around them. When KiKi Layne’s Nile Freeman, a U.S. Marine, finds herself surviving death, she joins Andy’s group and realizes just how valued immortality is.

A sequel was already an inviting idea after the first film. There were more than a few loose ends that we’d like to see sorted, including the future of Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo.) And with an entire endless future ahead of the main characters, there is no limit to what they can get up to.

The Old Guard 2 will see Victoria Mahoney take over as director, grabbing the chair from Gina Prince-Bythewood. Mahoney is an exciting choice. Her experience includes everything from working as the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and directing episodes of acclaimed shows like You and Lovecraft Country. So, we can’t wait to see what shape the Netflix sequel takes under her direction.

The Old Guard is currently streaming on Netflix, watch this space for word on the release window for the sequel.
