September was a wild month in gaming. Now, we’re looking towards October, and hopefully it’s going to live up to its lineup. With great series returning like Call of Duty and Yooka-Laylee, we have an idea of what to expect. That being said, games like The Outer Worlds and a reimagined Luigi’s Mansion 3 should make things interesting. Ghost Recon: Breakpoint – October 4th
A series set around teamwork and small group strategy, Ghost Recon is a long-running series. Breakpoint is the first game to take place in a fictional world. Unlike its predecessor, Wildlands, the game is promising to return to more realism in everything but its world. You won’t necessarily be made of glass, but don’t expect to regenerate health easily either. If you love tactical shooters like Rainbow Six: Siege, this is a must play title.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare – October 25th
Ditching the futuristic settings and rebranding the popular Modern Warfare series, Call of Duty looks to reinvent itself. As likely a best video games releasing in October, CoD has a lot to prove. Let’s be honest: the games aren’t what they used to be. People would rather hop into a game of Fortnite or Apex Legends right now, primarily because it’s a new, fresh experience. Nevertheless, the game features a new engine for improved performance and graphics, as well as cross-play. With new multiplayer modes offering 2v2 action as well as much more detailed, well thought out maps. The beta released this past week, and to be honest, it feels much better than the past titles.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair – October 8th
If you love platformers like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, you’re probably very excited about another Yooka-Laylee game. The spiritual successor to Rare’s two protagonist style of casual games, Yooka-Laylee is moving into the 2.5D world this time around. That’s right, much more in the vein of Donkey Kong Country, the game features a whole new look. It’s a little bold, considering the series is so new, but why not push the envelope? Playtonic wants to prove great platformers can exist with Mario starring in them.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 – October 31st
Name a duo better than a haunted mansion themed Luigi game and a Halloween release. I’ll wait. The third Luigi’s Mansion game comes at a time where Nintendo is on an IP roll. Link’s Awakening sort of surprised everyone, selling faster than any Switch game this year, including SuperMario Maker 2. The sequel to the original Gamecube title came out on 3DS, so there is a big chance most people didn’t play it. That means Luigi’s Mansion 3 is likely going to be the first game in the series for most people. Nintendo knows this, and they’ve spent a lot of time marketing the game to make sure it reaches gamers of all experience levels. MediEvil – October 25th
A remake/remaster of the original Playstation title, MediEvil follows Spyro and Crash Bandicoot as a series looking to find a new audience some 15 years after its initial launch. It worked for the other two, but they were much more popular than this action title. The announcement earned a lot of excitement. We’ll see if the game lives up to the nostalgia this upcoming month.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – October 15th
When Skyrim launched on the Switch, I was shocked that the game still felt fun despite the lower quality. The Switch is no joke console, but it’s not a PS4 or Xbox One. Nevertheless, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming to the Switch. Even with downplayed graphics and visuals, portable Witcher is a great, great thing.
The Outer Worlds – October 25th
It’s wild to think that Fallout: New Vegas, a one-off of sorts made by an entirely different development team, is loved so much. The team behind New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment, is starting its own steampunk style RPG, and it looks pretty incredible. With exclusivity likely going to Microsoft for future titles now that they own the studio, this Obsidian title is going to be a benchmark of what might come from the next-gen games Xbox spent so much time buying.
