After long delays due to production shutdowns, The Witcher has finally finished filming season 2 of the hit Netflix series. It has been awhile since the first season of The Witcher first revealed Geralt of Rivia. Season 1 of The Witcher allowed us to get to know Geralt and his penchant for monster hunting; long baths, coin collecting, and grunting for emphasis.

The World Of The Witcher Expands In Season 2

Season 2 of The Witcher expands the cast beyond the central core characters of Geralt; Ciri, Yennefer, and Jaskier the Bard. New faces are joining the cast for season 2 of The Witcher, including Graham McTavish as the Redanian spy Sigismund Dijkstra. And we’ll also get to know some powerful sorceresses alongside Yennefer, with Cassie Clare cast in the role of Philippa Eilhart.

Season 2 of The Witcher has just completed filming on an expanded story that will also see several other Witchers in play. These characters will appear at the Witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen, where Geralt takes Ciri for safekeeping and training. Some teaser images for season 2 of The Witcher show Ciri amidst the snowy fortifications of Kaer Morhen.

Season 2 of The Witcher will also focus on the concept of ‘found families‘ particularly in regards to Geralt’s brotherhood of Witchers. There is also the sisterhood of the Sorceresses. And the small familial unit of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will eventually come into play. However, showrunner Lauren Hissrich is sticking to the non-linear narrative structure that confused some viewers in the first season. Hopefully it will be a bit easier to follow in season 2.

An Official Synopsis And Set Photos For Season 2 of The Witcher

Netflix released an official synopsis for season 2 of The Witcher way back in October, that tells us the following.

“Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows: his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside.”

Actor Henry Cavill also shared some new images from season 2 of The Witcher on his Instagram. Looks like Geralt got himself some fancy new epaulets. He still hasn’t gotten a haircut though.

A teaser image also gives us a glimpse of Yennefer in season 2. After her fate was left uncertain at the end of last season, it is clear that she will be back. However, it appears that the sorceress is imprisoned and recovering from her wounds. Yennefer will likely have a bit of a journey to free herself from this new predicament.

More Projects In The Witcher Universe Are Coming

With filming complete on season 2 of The Witcher we should expect to see it return to our screens by the end of the year. This might coincide with several other Witcher related projects in the works at Netflix. There is an anime movie in the works called Nightmare of the Wolf.  That movie will follow one of the other Witchers we are going to meet in season 2 – Geralt’s mentor Vesemir. Additionally, a Witcher prequel series is coming to Netflix titled Witcher: Blood Origin starring Jodie Turner-Smith. The prequel will take place during the dramatic Conjunction of the Spheres, a pivotal moment in the history of the world(s). Both of these projects are still slated to be released in 2021, so it is very possible that we will get a ton of new Witcher content all at once.
