The upcoming Wheel of Time show on Amazon Prime has been highly anticipated by fans ever since it was first announced back in 2018. Since then we have gotten a few promotional teasers but no real trailer. Now at last we finally have some promotional photos for the upcoming Wheel of Time series. These images show off the ensemble cast of characters, as well as the world of Wheel of Time. Let’s dig in and see what these photos reveal.

In an exclusive for Entertainment Weekly, we see photos of the cast together on a hillside as they embark on their journey.

From left to right the characters in this photo are Nynaeve al’Meara (Zoë Robins); Matrim Cauthon (Barney Harris), a’Lan Mandragoran (Daniel Henney), Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), Egwene al’Vere (Madeline Madden), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), and Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski). The majority of this ensemble are characters from a place called The Two Rivers. They have grown up together and many of them are close friends.

However, when an Aes Sedai – Moiraine – and her Warder Lan arrive in their small village these teenagers will get a taste of the darkness threatening the outside world. Many of them will also learn the truth about their own innate powers, and what that means for their future.

Rand And Egwene’s Lives Will Be Turned Upside Down

In this image we see the characters of Egwene and Rand sitting on a mountainside. These two characters are very close, and actually begin the series more or less betrothed. They have known one another their entire lives. But their youthful romance will be cut short by forces beyond their control. And the fates that the pattern has already woven for them.

A Glimpse Of The Cursed City

In this dark image, we also catch a glimpse of the mysterious city called Shadar Logoth.  We can see Lan carrying an unconscious Moiraine while surrounded by dramatically imposing architecture and ancient statues. The group flees to this abandoned city as they run from the monsters called Trollocs. Even they fear to tread upon the cursed ground of Shadar Logoth.

According to showrunner Rafe Judkins: “We literally built Shadar Logoth from scratch just for 15 minutes of airtime, because it’s that important to the series. “That’s where it becomes very clear it’s not just the forces of good and evil. There are lots of different angles.”

Capturing A Man Who Can Channel The One Power

In the last of the official Wheel of Time photos from Entertainment Weekly, we see a man in a cage surrounded by Aes Sedai. This is the character of Logain Ablar (Álvaro Morte). He is a man who is able to channel the One Power like Aes Sedai do. However, any man with the ability to channel is rounded up and cut off from their magic. The threat to the world is too great, ever since a cataclysmic event in the history  of the world caused the male half of the One Power to be tainted. Now any man who attempts to channel the One Power for too long is driven mad. And can cause incredible chaos and destruction.

A Rundown Of The Aes Sedai’s Colorful Cloaks

Although it might seem like a small detail, it is actually very important to note the different colors of the Aes Sedai cloaks in the photo of Logain. The ranks of the Aes Sedai are made up various departments called Ajahs. Each one is color coded according to their area of focus. The woman in the green cloak is a member of the green ajah also known as the ‘battle ajah.’ The women of the green ajah prepare themselves for Tarmon Gaidon, the term used for the prophesied final battle of the Aes Sedai against The Dark One.

In the background we can see two women in red cloaks. As members of the Red Ajah, these Aes Sedai are dedicated to preventing misuse of the One Power. They are the ones who hunt down men who can channel and capture them, in order to prevent another cataclysm.

For reference, Moiraine is a member of the blue ajah. Aes Sedai of the blue ajah dedicate themselves to righteous causes and the pursuit of justice. Other ajahs include the yellow (healers); gray (diplomats), brown (knowledge and scholarship), and white (philosophers). There is also a rumored black ajah, made up of Aes Sedai who have dedicated themselves to the Dark One. This secretive sect seeks to undermine the work that the other women of the White Tower accomplish.

Wheel of Time Is The Missing Link Between LOTR and GOT

Showrunner Rafe Judkins is passionate about the world of Wheel of Time. He has often spoken about the importance of the series in the fantasy canon. It has a realistic fantasy world and multiple POVs, along with a mythical hero’s journey. This is a series that serves as an important link between two of the most popular fantasy adaptations in recent years, namely Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.

Wheel of Time is the first fantasy series that really dove into the political and cultural worlds of all these different characters,” Judkins told Entertainment Weekly. “It was also one of the first to dive into multiple POV characters, so you’re following an ensemble. Each of them their own agendas and approaches to everything. That’s always felt to me like the missing piece of the fantasy-literature landscape that hasn’t been brought to TV or film yet.”

The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Amazon Prime in November. As exciting as it is to see these first promotional photos for Wheel of Time, we are still eagerly awaiting an official trailer for this epic fantasy series. Of course we will be covering that as soon as it drops, along with all of the other genre news. To stay up to date, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today!

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
