Netflix Picks Up The Live-Action Wednesday Addams Series From Tim Burton
The Addams Family is one of those properties that has seen multiple adaptations. The family has seen adaptation many times for film and television. They have come a long way since first appearing as a 1930’s cartoon strip in The New Yorker. And now we will see at least one member of the family return to television in the near future. A live-action series focusing on the character of Wednesday Addams is in the works at Netflix. The series will be brought to life by famously macabre director Tim Burton.

Wednesday Will Be A Live-Action Comedy For Netflix
The new show is titled Wednesday. The Tim Burton live-action Addams Family series will air on Netflix as an 8 episode series. The series will diverge from the pre-existing Addams Family canon by focusing on Wednesday’s time at school at Nevermore Academy. And it sounds like there will be plenty of mystery and intrigue to keep the titular character busy.
The upcoming Wednesday series is being billed as a “live-action coming-of-age comedy.” It will also see Wednesday Addams reckoning with her emerging psychic powers. Netflix has had success with other spooky female-led shows for younger audiences like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It seems likely that Wednesday may be in a similar vein to that show, but with a more comedic backbone that will hopefully keep the show from venturing into grim-dark territory.

The choice of Tim Burton to run the series seems like a glaringly obvious choice. The director made his name with films that adhere to a similar bizarre gothic comedy ethos. Movies like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice came out around the time of the 1990’s Addams Family movies and there are many tonal similarities.
In recent years however, Burton’s output has been… questionable to say the least. Helming the Wednesday series for Netflix might finally see him return to form. This is also the first time that Burton has turned his hand at filmmaking to a television series, so it will be interesting to see how he does with a different format.
The big question is who will play the titular role of Wednesday Addams in the upcoming Netflix series with Tim Burton. I personally think it would be very fun to get Christina Ricci in the cast somewhere… maybe as Morticia? Or she could play one of Wednesday’s teachers at the Nevermore Academy? Ricci’s take on the role in the 1990’s Addams Family films was so iconic that any young actress taking on the role will have big shoes to fill.
However, no casting has yet been announced for the show. But you know we’ll be keeping a close eye on the project and updating you as we learn more.
