VE Schwab is one of those authors in high demand these days. It seems like every story she has ever written has been optioned for film or television adaptation. We recently reported on the new cast members who have joined her upcoming Netflix series First Kill. And there is still a potential movie trilogy based on her excellent Shades of Magic series that seems to be on hold due to the pandemic. Now, another television series is coming from Schwab with an adaptation of her novel City of Ghosts.

City of Ghosts by VE Schwab Will See Television Adaptation

City of Ghosts is the first novel in Schwab’s Cassidy Blake series, and was written under her full name of Victoria Schwab. A synopsis from Scholastic Books tells us the following about the story that follows a family of ghost-hunters in Scotland.

“Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one. When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.”

Schwab will executive produce the City of Ghosts series. Although it does not look like she will be writing the adaptation herself as she will do for First Kill. David Lowery (The Green Knight) and Sehaj Sethi (Two Sentence Horror Stories) will write the adaptation. Lowery is also onboard to direct the show.

Variety reports that ABC Signature and Searchlight Television picked up the rights to City of Ghosts by VE Schwab for adaptation. No news yet on who will star in this new supernatural drama show, but we will keep a close eye on this and all of the other upcoming VE Schwab adaptations as they enter production. Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
