Tom Sturridge, who plays Morpheus in The Sandman, discusses the evolution of his character and how, in the first season, he discovers empathy for the first time. On August 5, The Sandman will launch its debut season on Netflix. The big ensemble also includes Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, and Stephen Fry in addition to Sturridge.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s comics of the same name, The Sandman follows Tom Sturridge’s Morpheus as he breaks free from a century-long incarceration and struggles to bring order to his country of the Dreaming. Until Netflix approved the TV series in 2019, the series lingered in development hell for decades, with numerous adaptation attempts failing to take off.

The Sandman team announced a teaser at SDCC 2022

The Sandman’s creative team debuted numerous new teasers at SDCC 2022. They hinted at an exact replication of the comics’ appearance and tone. At San Diego Comic-Con, Tom Sturridge spoke with Screen Rant in an exclusive interview about the first season’s character development for Morpheus. The loss of his powers forces Morpheus to seek assistance from humans, which teaches him to sympathize with someone other than himself. He talks about how Morpheus begins the season apathetic and self-serving. He also discusses how Death, the sister of Morpheus (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), teaches him the value of having empathy. See his words on The Sandman below:

“I think a really important part of the story of our season is his discovery of that humanity. I think he doesn’t necessarily begin the way that he ends. It’s a quest. He is powerless at the beginning and he requires the help of humans to regain that power. In doing so, he listens to them. His sister Death also educates him on how extraordinary it is to try and feel someone who isn’t you. And I think that’s the birth of his empathy.”

Morpheus, according to Sturridge, is on a quest to gain sympathy. This fits the mold of a conventional protagonist arc. Morpheus’ portrayal in The Sandman comics demonstrates how selfish and self-serving he can be. Yet, as the hero, he must undergo some type of positive development for the audience to become emotionally invested in his tale. There would be less sense of weight and consequences to story beats and developments if Morpheus remained the same throughout the series.

Measuring how the protagonist affects and is affected by the story, as well as how they change from beginning to conclusion, is an excellent formula for crafting stories. In The Sandman, all other storyline lines can be built around the character arc of Morpheus, who begins the novel at a low position and must battle his own deeply ingrained way of thinking in order to achieve his goals. Fans of the books won’t have to wait long to find out if Sturridge can successfully balance Morpheus’ character development with the gripping appeal of the comics because The Sandman releases in less than a week.

The Neil Gaiman-penned The Sandman comes to television as a prospective American fantasy drama. It’s based on the DC Comics comic book that ran from 1989 to 1996. Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg created the Netflix original series. This series is being made by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. The Sandman chronicles the tale of Dream, the titular Sandman, just like the comic. Along with Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar in supporting parts, it stars Tom Sturridge as Dream.
